Build your personal cybersecurity plan in this order: secure the accounts that can unlock others, update and lock your devices, back up important files, watch for phishing, and record how to recover access. Start with primary email, your mobile-carrier account, financial accounts, and cloud storage. Then make the plan manageable: use automatic updates where practical, choose backup and sign-in methods you can actually restore, and review recovery details when your devices or contact information change.
1. Secure the accounts that can unlock others
Begin with your primary email, mobile-carrier, financial, and cloud-storage accounts. These are sensible priorities because losing access to them can affect other accounts or expose personal data; this is a practical ordering, not an official CISA ranking.
Use a unique password for every account
Use a password manager to generate and store a different, long, random password for each account. CISA’s 2025 consumer guidance recommends passwords that are at least 16 characters long, random, and unique. That is an agency recommendation, not a measured result or a guarantee that any particular length makes an account safe. CISA also advises choosing a manager that works across your devices, has a recovery process you understand, and supports MFA to protect the password vault. See CISA’s strong-password guidance and Project Upskill’s password-manager guidance.
Turn on multifactor authentication
Enable MFA wherever a service offers it, starting with the priority accounts above. Choose the strongest method that the service supports and that you can reliably use. A hardware security key is a physical option and can offer strong protection, but services differ in whether they support keys and how they handle backup or recovery. The FTC identifies authenticator apps and security keys as more secure two-factor options; consult the FTC’s account-protection guidance and CISA’s MFA guidance for general advice.

- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
2. Keep devices current and harder to access
Install security updates
Turn on automatic operating-system and app updates where available, and include your browser and security software in your update routine. Updates can deliver fixes for software flaws. If a device or app requires manual updates, check it regularly rather than assuming it is current. CISA explains the value of updates in its software-update guidance.
Lock devices and protect stored data
Use a passcode or biometric screen lock and enable built-in device encryption. Encrypt removable drives that contain sensitive files, too. Before enabling or changing encryption, make a backup and put the recovery key somewhere safe. Encryption protects data from someone who obtains the device or drive, but losing the recovery information can also leave you unable to access your own files. CISA’s digital-home tips discuss encryption and recovery information.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
3. Back up files you would need to recover
Choose a properly vetted cloud backup service or an external drive based on what you need to protect and how you would restore it. A backup is useful only if you can access it and recover the files that matter. Set a backup cadence that matches how often those files change; official consumer guidance recommends frequent backups but does not establish one schedule that fits every household.
If you use an external drive
Connect the drive for the backup, then disconnect it and store it safely until the next backup. A drive left connected may also be exposed to ransomware that can delete or corrupt the backup. CISA describes this risk and general backup practices in its digital-home tips.

Choose for recoverability, not just convenience
- For cloud backup, assess whether the service is adequately vetted and make sure you understand how you would regain access.
- For an external drive, consider whether you can keep it disconnected between backups and store it securely.
- Whichever option you choose, know how to restore the files you care about before you need them.
4. Treat unexpected messages as untrusted
Be cautious with urgent requests, unexpected attachments or links, and messages asking for personal information. Do not use contact details or links in a suspicious message to verify it. Instead, reach the person or organization through a separate trusted route, such as a known phone number, its official app, or a website address you enter yourself. Report or delete suspected phishing rather than opening its attachments or following its links. CISA’s phishing guidance covers recognizing and reporting suspicious messages.
5. Make account and device recovery part of the plan
Keep password-manager recovery details, account recovery codes, device encryption keys, and backup-access instructions somewhere protected and separate from the device or account they unlock. For important accounts, record where the recovery information is stored and how to use it. Where appropriate, tell a trusted person how to find emergency instructions without exposing passwords unnecessarily.
