Google’s October 2023 Android Security Bulletin said there were indications that CVE-2023-4863 and CVE-2023-4211 may be under limited, targeted exploitation. It did not report widespread attacks or publish an incident count. To check whether your device has the fixes, look for a security patch level of 2023-10-06 or later; Google says that level covers all issues in the bulletin, though update delivery depends on the device manufacturer.
What Google said about the two vulnerabilities
The bulletin’s exact qualification matters: “There are indications that the following may be under limited, targeted exploitation.” It names both CVEs, but does not identify attackers, quantify incidents, or say that exploitation was widespread. Google’s Android Security Bulletin—October 2023 was published on October 2, 2023, and the page was updated later.
| CVE | Bulletin description and severity | Patch level listed |
|---|---|---|
| CVE-2023-4211 | Arm component, Mali subcomponent; High | 2023-10-05 |
| CVE-2023-4863 | System remote-code execution; Critical | 2023-10-06 |
CVE-2023-4211: Arm Mali GPU driver
Google lists this High-severity issue under the Arm component and Mali subcomponent, with the 2023-10-05 security patch level. Google Project Zero characterizes it as a use-after-free in the Arm Mali GPU driver. Its analysis does not justify adding details about an exploit chain beyond that classification. Google Project Zero’s CVE-2023-4211 analysis provides the technical description.
CVE-2023-4863: Critical System remote-code execution
The bulletin classifies CVE-2023-4863 as a Critical remote-code-execution issue in the System component and lists it under the 2023-10-06 patch level. Google says it could be exploited without user interaction. The bulletin lists AOSP versions 11, 12, 12L, 13, and 14 for this issue; that is not a device-by-device list of affected models or update availability.

How to tell whether your Android device has the fixes
- Open your device’s Settings. Find the Android version and security patch level using Google’s Check and update your Android version instructions. Menu names and locations can vary by manufacturer.
- Read the security patch level date. A level of 2023-10-06 or later covers both vulnerabilities and all issues associated with earlier patch levels in the October bulletin. A 2023-10-05 level covers the bulletin’s earlier subset, including CVE-2023-4211, but does not by itself establish that CVE-2023-4863 is addressed.
- If the date is earlier, check for an update. Use the update option in Settings and follow your device manufacturer’s instructions. Google’s bulletin says manufacturers provide device updates, so release timing may differ by brand, model, and region.
The bulletin lists three October patch levels—2023-10-01, 2023-10-05, and 2023-10-06. Google uses multiple levels so Android partners can fix subsets of issues sooner; later levels include applicable earlier fixes. Do not treat a Google Play system update date that displays 2023-10-01 on some Android 10-or-later devices as proof that the device has the 2023-10-05 or 2023-10-06 vendor patch level. Check device-specific guidance when the displayed dates are unclear.

Google notes that security enhancements in newer Android versions make exploitation of many Android issues more difficult, and encourages users to update where possible. Google Play Protect is enabled by default on devices with Google Mobile Services and is particularly relevant when installing apps outside Google Play. These protections are not substitutes for installing the security update that applies to your device.
