Spotify Free is the better fit if avoiding a monthly bill matters more than ads, offline music, and direct playback control. Premium is worth considering if you regularly want ad-free music, music downloads for offline listening, more control over what plays next, or higher audio settings. The right plan depends on which limits affect your listening—and, for paid plans, how many eligible people need accounts.

What Free users can—and cannot—download
Free subscribers can download podcasts, but Spotify reserves music downloads for Premium. A Premium download is for offline playback inside the Spotify app; it is not a permanent music-file export.
Spotify says Premium subscribers can download up to 10,000 tracks on each of up to five devices. The app must connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active. Which plan fits your listening?
Stay with Free if cost comes first
Free is a practical choice if ads do not bother you, you can accept less direct control over playback, and you do not need offline music. It still provides music and podcasts without a subscription.
Choose Individual if you want fewer interruptions and more flexibility
Individual is the straightforward option if you listen often and want ad-free music, offline music downloads, or the ability to choose songs directly on mobile. Spotify’s getting-started guidance describes selected-song playback as a Premium feature on mobile; Free’s Smart Shuffle behavior is specifically documented for mobile, so do not assume identical controls on every device or surface. Consider Student only if you qualify
The U.S. page listed Student at $6.99 per month for one verified account. Check Spotify’s current eligibility and verification requirements before choosing it; the lower listed price is not available to everyone.
Compare Duo or Family by household use
If two or more people at the same address need separate Premium accounts, compare the total cost with the number of people who will actually use the plan. Duo is for two accounts; Family supports up to six under Spotify’s same-address rule. A larger account limit is useful only if eligible household members need it.

Does Premium audio quality make a difference?
Spotify describes two different Premium audio options: the familiar Very High setting, approximately 320 kbit/s, and lossless FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz across most of the catalog. Lossless is not another name for 320 kbit/s. The available setting and result depend on supported app and device, the track, network conditions, and selected settings; a higher specification alone does not guarantee an audible improvement for every listener. Consult Spotify’s audio-quality settings and Premium benefits for the stated details.
Is Spotify Premium worth it?
Premium is most compelling when its benefits solve a recurring problem: ads interrupt your listening, you need music offline, or you want more direct playback control. Higher audio options may matter if your listening setup, connection, and preferred tracks support them. If you rarely run into Free’s limits, paying every month may not add enough value. For households, base the decision on eligibility, active listeners, and total monthly cost rather than the plan’s maximum number of accounts.
