CVE-2014-9463 is a serious code-execution vulnerability in VBSEO, a discontinued search-engine-optimization add-on for vBulletin—not a flaw in vBulletin core. The 2015 warning advised operators to remove the add-on, apply a risky code workaround, or put the site behind a website firewall. The historical reports cannot establish whether any particular site is exposed today; that depends on what software and changes are present on the site now.
What is CVE-2014-9463?
The National Vulnerability Database (NVD) describes CVE-2014-9463 as a code-injection issue in VBSEO’s functions_vbseo_hook.php. Its record says a remote authenticated user could execute arbitrary code through the HTTP Referer header in a request to visitormessage.php. NVD assigns the issue CWE-94, code injection, and a CVSS 3.0 base score of 8.8 (High). The record was published on September 15, 2017, and is displayed as modified June 16, 2026. The score indicates severity; it is not a count of affected sites or evidence of how often the flaw was exploited. NVD’s CVE-2014-9463 record.
Sucuri initially reported a suspected remote script-injection issue, then updated its post to say it had confirmed remote code execution. SecurityWeek quoted Sucuri founder and CTO Daniel Cid describing a “full command execution vulnerability that allows for PHP code to be executed when passed via the referer field.” Sucuri’s January 8, 2015 report; SecurityWeek’s January 12, 2015 coverage.
Was authentication required?
The historical sources do not agree on the access requirement. NVD’s description specifies a remote authenticated user, while Sucuri’s account and contemporaneous coverage describe the issue as remote and unauthenticated. The discrepancy means the available record does not settle whether an attacker needed an account. It is safest to treat the flaw as serious without assuming either access condition applies to every affected configuration.

Which software was affected?
The CVE concerns VBSEO, a vBulletin SEO module. NVD’s recorded configuration names VBSEO and vBulletin 4.2.2 and previous versions. That is not evidence that vBulletin core itself was vulnerable to this CVE. Contemporary reporting said VBSEO had been discontinued, leaving no expected new patch; Sucuri said the add-on had been discontinued the prior year. The warning referred to the latest VBSEO version and potentially others, but did not establish a complete affected-version range.
What did the 2015 warning recommend?
The contemporary advice presented three choices. They differ in whether they remove the add-on, alter the implicated code, or add a defensive layer:

Sucuri also noted that installations using vBulletin’s “Suspect File Versions” diagnostics tool would need to update the MD5 sum in upload/includes/md5_sums_crawlability_vbseo.php after modifying the file. These were historical directions, not a guarantee that the workaround is appropriate for a present installation.
How can an operator assess a site today?
The 2015 reports and the NVD entry do not show whether a particular site still has VBSEO installed, whether its files were changed, or whether another control is in place. A current assessment requires checking the site’s actual software and maintenance history. If VBSEO is present, determine whether it is still active and whether the implicated file retains the Referer-based concatenation described in the historical workaround. Because VBSEO was discontinued, do not treat that old workaround as equivalent to supported software or as proof that a site is secure. Have a qualified administrator review the installation before making changes, especially if the forum depends on the module.

Sucuri reproduced a sentence from a vBulletin warning email: “We’ve attempted to contact the vendor, but as they have been non-responsive we felt we should alert the community as many of our customers use this add-on software.” That statement was presented as part of the vendor email reproduced in Sucuri’s post, not as a new Sucuri statement.
