The Linux Foundation’s 2013 account says tailored developer training helped prepare the team to work across its varied Linux environments. It describes a specific ISS-supporting project—not a migration of every computer aboard the station.
What the ISS team was migrating
Keith Chuvala, a United Space Alliance leader responsible for the Laptops and Network Integration Teams, oversaw developers building and integrating software for OpsLAN, a network of laptops used to support crew tasks. The Linux Foundation case study names location information, equipment inventory, and camera interfaces among the functions involved.
Chuvala said the team moved key functions from Windows to Linux because it needed an operating system it considered stable and reliable, while retaining in-house control to patch, adjust, or adapt the system. This was an operational decision tied to the team’s support responsibilities, not evidence of a general Windows-versus-Linux performance comparison.
Why training mattered
The case study, published March 27, 2013, says the Linux Foundation arranged two tailored courses for the USA/NASA team: “Introduction to Linux for Developers” and “Developing Applications For Linux.” The instruction was adjusted for participants with different experience levels and for a mixed distribution environment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Linux Foundation instructor Dominic Duval described that environment as including a substantial Debian deployment alongside multiple versions of RHEL/CentOS. The account reports that the laptop-support work moved from Scientific Linux to Debian 6. These are historical details from the 2013 case study, not a description of the station’s current software.

How the migration fits the ISS computing context
NASA’s technical reference, The International Space Station: Operating an Outpost in the New Frontier, describes the Portable Computer System as using Scientific Linux and as an interface through which crew members could interact with station systems. That provides broader technical context for Linux-based portable computing on the ISS; it does not independently verify the Windows-to-Linux migration timeline described in the Linux Foundation case study.
The Linux Foundation account also mentions Robonaut 2 (R2) as a further development challenge and says the robot ran Linux. That statement belongs to the 2013 account and should not be read as confirmation of R2’s present status or software configuration.

What the account does—and does not—establish
- It does establish the team’s stated reasons for moving key functions: stability, reliability, and in-house control over changes.
- It describes OpsLAN laptop software supporting specific crew activities and tailored Linux developer training for the team.
- It does not establish that every computer aboard the ISS migrated from Windows to Linux, the current operating systems used across the station, or a measured before-and-after improvement in performance.
