Set the time zone using the scheduler’s own supported setting: Cronie uses CRON_TZ in a crontab, Kubernetes CronJobs use .spec.timeZone, and AWS EventBridge Scheduler uses a separate schedule time-zone setting. Their cron syntax and daylight-saving-time behavior differ, so first identify the scheduler and decide whether the job should follow local wall-clock time or run at a UTC time.

Choose UTC or local time before writing the schedule

Use UTC when the schedule should follow UTC clock time—for example, to run at a fixed UTC hour regardless of seasonal clock changes. Use a named civil time zone when the job must follow local clock time as offsets change through the year. A local time can be missing during the spring daylight-saving transition or occur twice during the fall transition; decide what should happen in those cases, then check the selected scheduler’s documented behavior.

Do not assume a time-zone setting, cron expression, or daylight-saving rule supported by one scheduler will work in another. The examples below cover Cronie, Kubernetes CronJobs, and AWS EventBridge Scheduler, not every Unix cron implementation or AWS scheduling product.

Set the time zone in the scheduler you use

Cronie and traditional Linux cron

In Cronie, put CRON_TZ before the entries it governs. The schedule fields are interpreted in that zone:

CRON_TZ=Asia/Tokyo
5 0 * * * /path/to/job

This example is intended to run the command daily at 00:05 in Tokyo time. It requires a cron daemon that supports Cronie’s CRON_TZ extension and accepts the selected zone identifier. Cronie’s manual demonstrates the setting with CRON_TZ=Japan and explains that the table’s time is entered according to that zone: Cronie crontab(5) manual.

Cronie’s log timestamps use the local time zone of the daemon, not necessarily the zone specified by CRON_TZ. A log entry can therefore appear to have a different hour from the one in the schedule’s zone.

Cronie documents that a job scheduled during a nonexistent spring-forward hour does not run, while a matching time in the repeated fall-back hour can run twice. Do not rely on a local-time Cronie schedule for exactly-once execution across those transitions.

Kubernetes CronJob

Set the zone in .spec.timeZone, and keep the cron expression in .spec.schedule free of inline TZ or CRON_TZ text. Kubernetes documents inline time-zone specifications as unsupported. For example, a UTC schedule can be configured as:

Here, the schedule is daily at 00:05 in Etc/UTC. Replace the example container image and job details with values appropriate to your workload. A regional IANA time-zone name can be used when the schedule must follow that region’s local clock. Check the documentation version that matches your cluster; the cited Kubernetes v1.35 CronJob documentation describes .spec.timeZone.

Kubernetes describes CronJob scheduling as approximate: circumstances can result in two Jobs or no Job for a scheduled execution time. Treat the CronJob controller as a trigger, not an exactly-once transaction mechanism. Make the work safe to retry, and provide a recovery approach for an execution that does not occur when correctness depends on completing it.

AWS EventBridge Scheduler

For EventBridge Scheduler, configure the time zone separately from the cron expression, using the schedule time-zone setting or the --schedule-expression-timezone option. AWS says schedules are evaluated in UTC or the selected time zone and use the IANA Time Zone Database. This guidance applies to EventBridge Scheduler, not automatically to legacy EventBridge scheduled rules.

EventBridge Scheduler uses a six-field cron expression: minute, hour, day of month, month, day of week, and year. Its documented daylight-saving policy skips an invocation at a nonexistent spring-forward local time and invokes only once during a repeated fall-back hour. See AWS’s documentation for EventBridge Scheduler schedule types and its cron and daylight-saving details.

How the three schedulers differ

Scheduler Where to set the time zone Documented daylight-saving behavior Scheduling caveat
Cronie CRON_TZ before the crontab entries it governs. Cronie manual Missing spring-forward times do not match; matching times in the repeated fall-back hour can run twice. Cronie manual Log timestamps use the daemon’s local zone, which may differ from CRON_TZ. Cronie manual
Kubernetes CronJob .spec.timeZone; inline TZ and CRON_TZ in .spec.schedule are unsupported in the v1.35 documentation. Kubernetes v1.35 documentation Not stated in the cited Kubernetes v1.35 documentation. Kubernetes v1.35 documentation Job creation is approximate; two Jobs or no Job can occur for an execution time. Kubernetes v1.35 documentation
AWS EventBridge Scheduler A separate schedule time-zone setting; AWS also documents --schedule-expression-timezone. AWS documentation Skips nonexistent spring-forward times and invokes once during a repeated fall-back hour. AWS documentation Uses six cron fields, including year. AWS documentation

These differences are why a cron expression that is valid in one environment may not be valid in another. The cited documentation establishes the listed behaviors; it does not establish a single daylight-saving policy or logging-time rule for every scheduler implementation.

Check the schedule before relying on it

  1. Identify the scheduler and version. Confirm whether the host runs Cronie or another cron daemon, which Kubernetes version runs the CronJob, or whether the AWS resource is EventBridge Scheduler rather than a legacy scheduled rule.
  2. Choose the intended clock. Use UTC for a schedule anchored to UTC; choose a named civil time zone when the job must track local clock time.
  3. Use that scheduler’s time-zone field. Put CRON_TZ before Cronie entries, set Kubernetes .spec.timeZone, or set the EventBridge Scheduler time zone separately from its expression.
  4. Verify syntax and zone identifiers. Do not transfer cron-field counts or inline time-zone syntax between products. Confirm that the installed daemon or service accepts the chosen zone name and expression.
  5. Plan for gaps, overlaps, and delivery uncertainty. Check how the scheduler handles nonexistent and repeated local times. Where duplicate or missed execution could affect correctness, make processing safe to retry and define how missed work is detected or recovered.
  6. Compare schedule and log clocks. For Cronie, remember that log timestamps use the daemon’s local zone even when CRON_TZ specifies another zone. Verify logging behavior in the relevant platform documentation before interpreting timestamps elsewhere.

Time-zone rules and scheduler implementations can change. Recheck the documentation for the exact daemon, cluster version, cloud service, and selected zone before deploying a schedule that depends on local clock behavior.
