Not exactly. Omnissa reported 3.1 times more total forced shutdowns on Windows than on macOS in its 2026 enterprise-device study. It separately reported 2.2 times more application crashes and 7.5 times more app hangs. Those figures describe aggregated activity on Omnissa-managed enterprise devices—not a controlled test proving that every Windows PC crashes three times as often as every Mac.

What the three figures actually measure

The headline’s “3x” refers to Omnissa’s comparison of total forced shutdowns, not to one all-purpose crash rate. The company’s March 24, 2026, release reports these platform comparisons:

Reported measure Windows compared with macOS What to take from it
Total forced shutdowns 3.1 times more on Windows This is the figure closest to the headline. Secondary coverage describes the total as including system crashes and unexpected restarts.
Application crashes 2.2 times more on Windows A separate measure from total forced shutdowns.
App hangs 7.5 times more on Windows An app becoming unresponsive is distinct from a crash or forced shutdown.

These are reported relative comparisons. The public summary does not provide enough detail to convert them into a reader-facing probability such as “a Windows computer has a 3.1-times chance of crashing,” or to infer how many events an individual user should expect.

What Omnissa studied

Omnissa released its 2026 study on March 24, 2026. Its press release says the analysis used anonymized, aggregated telemetry from millions of Omnissa-managed enterprise endpoints worldwide, collected from January through December 2025 and spanning more than 17 industries. The company says it analyzed device, application, and system activity.

This makes the findings a report about observed conditions in managed workplace fleets. It is not a randomized consumer comparison in which matched Windows PCs and Macs ran the same software and workloads under controlled conditions. Omnissa’s report page places the interruption findings in a wider discussion of device choice, shadow applications and AI, security hygiene, and employee experience. Its related blog post also describes Workspace ONE telemetry gathered over the same 2025 period.

What the study does not establish

The public summary does not disclose the Windows and Mac endpoint counts or enough information about event normalization and comparability to independently assess how the ratios were calculated. HotHardware likewise notes that the platform sample breakdown and the conditions surrounding crashes are unclear in its coverage of the report.

Nor do the public materials establish why the interruption measures differ. Hardware variety, software, device age, configuration, or management practices might be questions for further investigation, but the reported ratios alone do not demonstrate that any one of these caused the gap. The figures are useful as an account of Omnissa-managed fleets, but they should not be generalized to all Windows and Mac computers or users.

How to use the findings when choosing a platform

If you are deciding between a Windows PC and a Mac, treat the report as one piece of enterprise-fleet evidence—not a model-by-model reliability verdict. Assess the setup you will actually use:

  • Lifecycle and cost: Consider your replacement schedule, support needs, and total costs alongside reliability evidence relevant to your own use.

Omnissa’s report also says AI assistant app usage grew nearly 1,000% year over year in 2025 across major operating systems. That is context for the report’s broader discussion of workplace technology; it is not evidence about the cause of the Windows–macOS interruption differences.
