The Linux Foundation has not demonstrated that it is “saving the planet.” Its 2021 headline framed climate change as a challenge open collaboration might help address. The practical work spans three different areas: software and standards for electricity systems, data and analytics intended to inform climate-aligned finance, and methods for reducing software’s environmental footprint. Current project activity shows these efforts continue; the cited sources do not quantify their climate impact.
What the 2021 headline meant
In its article published on 11 November 2021, the Linux Foundation argued that decarbonising energy, transport and buildings would require coordinated changes to interconnected infrastructure. It presented open-source software as a way for organisations to collaborate on flexible, interoperable systems rather than build every component in isolation. That is an argument for how collaboration could help—not an impact assessment showing how much emissions it has reduced.
The article described a transition from centralised fossil-fuel generation toward renewable power and distributed energy resources. It discussed needs such as grid automation, monitoring, resilience, congestion management, electric transport and vehicle-to-grid integration. It also imagined devices responding to grid signals through the wider open-source ecosystem; the article described that as a possibility, not as a capability deployed across that ecosystem.
The Foundation’s article said that electrifying energy, transport and the built environment could mitigate approximately 75% of carbon emissions. That is a claim the Linux Foundation made in 2021; the article does not identify the originating study or organisation, so it should not be treated here as an independently verified estimate.

Three initiatives, three intervention points
| Initiative | Where it intervenes | What it works on | What the cited evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| LF Energy | Electricity systems and energy infrastructure | Open-source software, standards and data for energy systems | Current project and organisation activity; not measured emissions reductions |
| OS-Climate | Financial and investment decisions | Climate and sustainability data, models and analytics intended to support climate-aligned finance | Tool-building purpose and governance context; not current adoption or investment outcomes |
| Green Software Foundation | Software development and operation | Standards, tools, research, education and community practices for software with lower environmental impact | Mission and self-reported participation figures; not verified environmental benefits |
LF Energy: shared software for power systems
LF Energy describes itself as the Linux Foundation’s neutral home for open-source software, standards and data used by energy systems. The idea is that shared components and interoperable standards can help utilities, vendors, researchers and other participants develop and connect systems. The 2021 article discussed areas including substations, multi-protocol gateways, grid operations and electric-vehicle integration.
At the time of research in 2026, LF Energy’s own website listed 35+ projects, 80+ member organisations and 270+ contributing organisations. These are organisation-published scale figures, not independently audited measures of climate outcomes. A Linux Foundation announcement dated 15 September 2026 reported new members Coreso and Landis+Gyr, and new projects AssetLife, CityLearn, EnerGNN and Smart HEMS Benchmark, alongside technical milestones across the portfolio. This shows recent organisational and project activity, not emissions reductions attributable to LF Energy.

The 2021 article’s figure of 20 open-source projects and 44 members belongs to its 2021 context and should not be mistaken for a current count.
OS-Climate: data and analytics for financial decisions
OS-Climate develops data and software tools intended to help investors and financial institutions assess climate alignment and physical risk. The Linux Foundation announced on 20 July 2022 that OS-Climate had released three analytical tools for public collaboration. A charter effective 20 May 2024 describes a supplemental directed fund supporting climate and sustainability data, modelling and analytics projects hosted by FINOS. It names Portfolio Alignment, Physical Risk & Resilience Tools, Transition Analysis and OS-Climate Data Commons among the initial technical projects.

These sources explain the initiative’s tool-building purpose and governance structure. They do not establish how widely the tools are used today, whether they changed investment decisions, or whether those decisions produced emissions reductions. The 2021 article also described a $1.2 trillion climate-investment gap, but the cited material does not establish the estimate’s origin or current validity, so it should not be read as a verified current figure.
Green Software Foundation: reducing software’s environmental footprint
The Green Software Foundation works on standards, policy and research, education, tooling and community. Its stated scope goes beyond carbon emissions to include energy consumption, water use and hardware lifecycle. That broader view matters because software’s environmental footprint depends not only on code, but also on the infrastructure and equipment used to build and run it.

In 2026, the Foundation’s about page reported 74+ member organisations and 130,000+ Green Software Practitioner course completions. These are self-reported participation figures; they do not show that software emissions have fallen or demonstrate course effectiveness. The 2021 Linux Foundation article described the Green Software Foundation as an initiative formed that year to develop shared practices and a trusted ecosystem.

For readers assessing whether the headline’s ambition translates into action, distinguish evidence of activity from evidence of impact:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Activity: LF Energy’s current portfolio figures and the September 2026 announcement document projects, members and technical milestones. The Green Software Foundation reports members and course completions. OS-Climate’s announcements and charter describe tools, technical projects and governance.
- Impact: The cited sources do not provide a quantified, attributable measure of emissions avoided, climate resilience gained, or investment redirected because of these initiatives.
- Interpretation: Open-source collaboration can make it easier to share software, standards, data and practices. Whether that collaboration produces environmental benefits depends on how tools are adopted and used, and on the real-world decisions and systems they influence.
The distinction keeps the three initiatives from being collapsed into a single “planet-saving” result. They address different points in the climate challenge, and the evidence available for each is chiefly about its purpose, work and participation—not measured climate outcomes.
