Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo inspect files in a SQL Server database, run a query against sys.database_files while connected to that database. Join it to sys.filegroups on data_space_id to show each data file’s filegroup; log files have no filegroup.
Query the current database’s files and filegroups
This query returns each file’s logical and physical names, type, state, size, growth settings, and—where applicable—its filegroup. Run it in the database you want to inspect: sys.database_files describes the current database, not every database on the server. Microsoft documents the view’s columns and units in sys.database_files (Transact-SQL).
SELECT
df.file_id,
df.name AS logical_file_name,
df.type_desc,
df.physical_name,
fg.name AS filegroup_name,
df.state_desc,
df.size / 128.0 AS size_mb,
df.max_size,
df.growth
FROM sys.database_files AS df
LEFT JOIN sys.filegroups AS fg
ON df.data_space_id = fg.data_space_id;
The LEFT JOIN is intentional: it keeps log-file rows even though they do not belong to a filegroup. A data file’s positive data_space_id identifies its filegroup; 0 identifies a transaction log file. Joining the ID to sys.filegroups.data_space_id supplies the group name. See Microsoft’s sys.filegroups (Transact-SQL) reference.
Interpret size, growth, and maximum size
sizeis stored in 8-KB pages. Dividing by128.0converts pages to megabytes; the decimal keeps the result from being truncated to an integer.growthis the configured growth increment. A value of0means the file does not grow automatically. Interpret the increment together with the file’s growth configuration rather than treating the raw number as a size in megabytes.max_sizeis the configured maximum in pages;-1means the file can grow until the disk is full. Check the catalog documentation for the units and special values of these columns.physical_nameis the path recorded in SQL Server metadata. It is not an operating-system disk-health check, nor does it establish how a path should be interpreted on every platform or replica.
Check unused space inside a data file
To estimate space allocated to a file but not currently used by data, Microsoft’s example combines the file size with FILEPROPERTY(name, 'SpaceUsed'). The result is unused space within the database file—not free space on the underlying operating-system volume.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
SELECT
name AS logical_file_name,
size / 128.0 AS size_mb,
(size - FILEPROPERTY(name, 'SpaceUsed')) / 128.0 AS unused_space_mb
FROM sys.database_files
WHERE type_desc = 'ROWS';
This calculation is for data files. It does not turn catalog metadata into a live inventory of disk capacity or health. The relevant columns and example are documented in Microsoft’s sys.database_files reference.
Use built-in file and filegroup reports
For a quick report without writing a catalog query, execute either procedure in the database being checked:

EXEC sys.sp_helpfile;reports the current database’s files.EXEC sys.sp_helpfilegroup;reports filegroup names and attributes. Supplying a filegroup name can list its files and their properties.
These procedures are convenient summaries; the catalog views are more flexible when you need to filter, join, or shape results for a script. See Microsoft’s references for sp_helpfile and sp_helpfilegroup.
Understand what filegroups do
Filegroups are logical groups of data files used for allocation and administration. The primary filegroup contains the primary data file and any secondary data files that have not been assigned elsewhere; databases can also have user-defined filegroups. Transaction log files are separate and are not members of filegroups. Microsoft explains the structure and allocation behavior in Database Files and Filegroups.

SQL Server uses proportional fill when allocating data across files in a filegroup, taking each file’s free space into account. More files are not an automatic performance improvement: file layout should reflect the database’s administrative and workload needs. Microsoft’s general guidance is that “Most databases will work well with a single data file and a single transaction log file.” That is design guidance, not a guarantee for every database.

Microsoft lists sys.database_files and sys.filegroups as visible to the public role, and the procedure references specify public-role membership. Actual results still depend on SQL Server’s metadata-visibility behavior and the deployment context. If expected rows or details are absent, verify which database your session is using and whether the executing principal can see the relevant metadata. See Microsoft’s Metadata Visibility Configuration.
