To find out whether a Switch 2 game works offline, check the exact game edition’s Nintendo eShop or product page and packaging for internet, cloud-version, or Game-Key Card requirements. Then check how a digital copy is licensed on your console: a loaded Virtual Game Card can be played offline, but online-license access requires an internet connection. Cloud versions need internet during play. A game’s compatibility with Switch 2 is a separate check from whether it can be played offline.
Check the game’s internet requirements first
Look up the exact edition you plan to play in Nintendo eShop or the game’s product information, and inspect its packaging if you are buying a physical copy. Check for notices that the game requires internet to play, is a cloud version, or needs an online membership check. Do not assume that a physical card or a completed download means every part of the game works offline.

Some games have offline single-player content but keep particular modes online. Check which requirement applies to the content you intend to use. Nintendo also lists an internet requirement to play or to verify a Nintendo Switch Online membership as possible reasons a game may show an internet error at startup. Nintendo’s startup troubleshooting guidance explains these cases.
Understand what kind of copy you have
| Access format | Internet timing | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Regular physical game card | Depends on the game; the card alone does not establish whether internet is needed. | Check the game’s product information and packaging for online or cloud requirements. |
| Digital game with a loaded Virtual Game Card | Can be played offline while its Virtual Game Card is loaded on the console. | Confirm the card is loaded on the Switch 2 you will use. Nintendo says a loaded card for a game or DLC can be played without an internet connection. Virtual Game Card Guide |
| Downloaded game using online-license access | Requires internet to play through this access method. | Nintendo describes online-license access as a way to play downloaded software while the console is connected to the internet, without loading its Virtual Game Card. Online License Setting guide |
| Game-Key Card | Internet is required to download the game and for its first launch; after that, it can start offline. | Keep the Game-Key Card inserted to play. The full game is downloaded, so make sure there is enough free space in system memory or on a microSD Express card. Game-Key Card Overview |
| Cloud version | Requires a stable, consistent high-speed internet connection throughout play. | The game is streamed from a server rather than fully downloaded to the console. Cloud Versions FAQ |
Prepare a digital game for offline play
- Identify the access method. Check whether the game is available as a Virtual Game Card or whether you are relying on online-license access.
- Load the Virtual Game Card on the console you will take offline. Nintendo says a loaded Virtual Game Card can be played without internet. Swapping virtual cards between linked consoles requires an internet connection. See Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide.
- Do not rely on online-license access without connectivity. That setting is for playing downloaded software while connected to the internet, rather than using a loaded Virtual Game Card. Details are in Nintendo’s Online License Setting guide.
Prepare a Game-Key Card before leaving
A Game-Key Card does not contain the full game. While connected to the internet, download the software and launch it once; Nintendo says an internet connection is required for the first launch, but not for later launches. Keep the card with you, because it must be inserted to play. Check that you have enough free storage before downloading. Nintendo identifies system memory and microSD Express as storage options; the required space varies by game, so check that title’s packaging or store page. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card Overview has the details.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Check Switch 2 compatibility separately
If the game was made for the original Nintendo Switch, verify that it works on Switch 2 using Nintendo’s compatibility information. Compatibility answers whether the title works on the console; it does not establish whether an internet connection is needed. Check the game’s online requirements and its access format separately.
