The available record confirms the headline appeared in HotHardware’s June 2024 sitemap, but does not establish which asteroids it referred to or their sizes, approach distances, speeds, or impact risk. A close approach is not the same as a predicted impact, and “plane-sized” is an analogy—not a NASA hazard category.
Are the asteroids going to hit Earth?
The headline alone cannot answer that question. Its appearance in HotHardware’s June 2024 sitemap confirms that a story with that title was published, but the accessible entry does not include the story text or identify the objects. Without their designations and dated orbital assessments, it is not possible to verify whether any faced an impact risk.
An asteroid making a close approach means it passes near Earth along its orbit. That description does not mean it will collide with the planet. NASA says the Minor Planet Center and the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) calculate the paths of asteroids and comets and assess whether they might pose an impact threat. The assessment for a particular object depends on its observations and orbit, not on a headline’s size comparison.
How close will they pass?
The headline does not provide enough verified information to state a closest-approach date, time, distance, or speed. Those details should be reported for each identified asteroid from an appropriately dated NASA or JPL record, because orbit estimates can be updated as more observations become available.

A useful comparison of close approaches would include the object’s designation, estimated diameter and uncertainty, closest-approach date and time, nominal distance from Earth, relative speed, and current impact-risk assessment with its source and observation date. None of those object-specific values can be confirmed from the accessible sitemap entry, so assigning figures to this 2024 headline would be speculation.
What does “plane-sized” mean?
It is a familiar size analogy, not a standardized NASA measurement or category. NASA describes asteroids as rocky, airless bodies orbiting the Sun, with sizes ranging from roughly car-length objects to bodies as wide as a large city. An airplane comparison can suggest scale, but without a stated diameter and uncertainty it does not tell readers an object’s actual size.

Asteroids also vary in composition and shape. A rough analogy is not enough to assess either the consequences of an impact or the probability that one will occur.
What is a potentially hazardous asteroid?
NASA’s NEOWISE overview describes potentially hazardous asteroids as objects larger than 330 feet (100 meters) that come within 5 million miles (about 8 million kilometers) of Earth. These thresholds define a class based on size and proximity; they do not mean an impact is imminent or predicted.

That distinction matters: a close approach is an orbital event, “potentially hazardous” is a classification, and an impact prediction is a separate risk assessment. The title does not establish that the asteroids it mentions met NASA’s potentially hazardous criteria.
How does NASA track asteroids?
Observations from telescopes help astronomers determine an object’s orbit. The Minor Planet Center and CNEOS calculate where asteroids and comets are going and assess whether they might pose an impact threat. For a specific object, its designation and a current, dated orbital assessment are more useful than a broad description such as “plane-sized.”

NASA’s NEOWISE mission overview also provides important historical context: NASA ended the mission on July 31, 2024, decommissioned the spacecraft on August 8, 2024, and it reentered Earth’s atmosphere on November 1, 2024. NEOWISE should not be described as a currently operating asteroid-hunting mission. In remarks on June 30, 2021, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said, “Using ground-based telescopes, over 26,000 near-Earth asteroids have already been discovered, but there are many more to be found.” That is a 2021 figure, not a current count.

NASA has demonstrated one asteroid-deflection technique, but that does not mean every future threat could be prevented. On September 26, 2022, NASA’s DART spacecraft deliberately struck Dimorphos, a moonlet orbiting the asteroid Didymos. NASA reported that the impact shortened Dimorphos’s orbital period from 11 hours and 55 minutes to 11 hours and 23 minutes—a change of 32 minutes, with an uncertainty of about plus or minus two minutes. NASA describes DART as the first full-scale demonstration of asteroid deflection technology.
