After connecting to the same local network, open the board’s IP address followed by /webserial. This is the WebSerial library for a device-hosted terminal, not the browser’s separate Web Serial API.
What WebSerial does on an ESP32
WebSerial is a remote terminal library that runs on the microcontroller. The ESP32 serves a page over Wi-Fi; a browser on the network can then display logs and exchange messages with the firmware. The project describes it as a way to “log, monitor or debug your firmware without being connected by wire.” See the WebSerial project README.
The terminal is useful when the board is installed somewhere inconvenient for a wired serial monitor, or when you want to inspect debug output from another device on the LAN. It does not make every serial-monitor feature available automatically: your sketch must print the output you want to see, and it must register a message callback if you want to receive user input.
What you need before installing
- An ESP32 development board supported by the ESP32 Arduino environment. ESP32 is a family of different chips, not one identical hardware configuration; check the exact board and chip documentation, especially if USB or serial interfaces matter. Espressif’s Arduino ESP32 supported-features matrix shows that peripheral support varies by chip.
- A working Arduino IDE or PlatformIO setup, plus Wi-Fi credentials for the network the board will join.
- Compatible versions of the ESP32 Arduino core and asynchronous networking libraries. The WebSerial installation documentation currently lists ESP32 Arduino Core 3.3.2 or newer, ESP32Async AsyncTCP 3.4.9 or newer, and ESP32Async ESPAsyncWebServer 3.8.1 or newer. Treat these as the documentation’s stated minimums, not a guarantee that every board and core combination has been tested. Check the installation instructions for updates before setup.
WebSerial documentation covers both Arduino IDE and PlatformIO. For PlatformIO, it advises setting lib_compat_mode = strict; it also warns that dependency resolution across multiple architectures can cause compile errors. If a build fails or the interface only partly works, first compare the installed dependency versions and project configuration with the current installation documentation rather than mixing older examples with newer libraries.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Install the libraries
Install WebSerial and its required asynchronous networking dependencies using the workflow for your environment. The stack uses ESPAsyncWebServer to provide the web server and WebSocket functionality, with AsyncTCP supporting the ESP32 implementation. The exact installation steps differ between Arduino IDE and PlatformIO; follow the relevant section in the WebSerial installation guide and make sure the dependency versions satisfy its ESP32 requirements.
ESPAsyncWebServer’s setup documentation shows the asynchronous server pattern and notes that authentication should now use AsyncAuthenticationMiddleware rather than deprecated methods. When configuring access control, use the API documented for your installed version; older examples may use obsolete authentication calls. See ESPAsyncWebServer server setup.

Integrate WebSerial into an Arduino sketch
The documented pattern is to connect to Wi-Fi, create an AsyncWebServer, initialize WebSerial with that server, start the server, and call WebSerial.loop() from the Arduino loop. The following shows the structure; replace the Wi-Fi placeholders with your network details and retain the required libraries installed for your project.
#include <Arduino.h>
#include <WiFi.h>
#include <AsyncTCP.h>
#include <ESPAsyncWebServer.h>
#include <WebSerial.h>
const char* ssid = "YOUR_WIFI_NAME";
const char* password = "YOUR_WIFI_PASSWORD";
AsyncWebServer server(80);
void setup() {
Serial.begin(115200);
WiFi.mode(WIFI_STA);
WiFi.begin(ssid, password);
while (WiFi.status() != WL_CONNECTED) {
delay(500);
}
Serial.println(WiFi.localIP());
WebSerial.begin(&server);
WebSerial.onMessage([](uint8_t *data, size_t len) {
Serial.write(data, len);
WebSerial.println("Message received");
});
server.begin();
}
void loop() {
WebSerial.loop();
}
This follows the WebSerial integration guide. Its callback receives a byte pointer and message length; the example writes received bytes to hardware serial and echoes a response in the browser terminal. Adapt the callback to your firmware’s command handling rather than treating arbitrary incoming text as a safe command. Add your own Serial.println() calls wherever useful logs should appear.

Open the terminal and verify communication
- Upload the sketch and let the ESP32 join Wi-Fi. Check the serial output for the local IP printed by
WiFi.localIP(). - On a device connected to the same local network, open
http://<YOUR_DEVICE_IP>/webserial, substituting the IP printed by the board. The integration guide uses this HTTP URL and route. - Confirm that text printed by the firmware appears in the browser terminal.
- If you registered an input callback, send a test message from the page and confirm that the callback’s expected response or behavior occurs.
The documented example serves the interface over HTTP on the LAN. It is a local-network debugging interface, not evidence of a hardened public Internet service.
Secure the debug terminal
Anyone who can reach an exposed debug terminal may be able to view logs or submit input handled by your sketch. WebSerial documents authentication through WebSerial.setAuthentication("username", "password") and recommends strong, unique credentials, avoiding defaults or guessable values, and rotating credentials. Follow the current WebSerial authentication documentation for the exact setup supported by your version.

WebSerial library versus the browser Web Serial API
| Approach | Where the connection runs | Typical use | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| WebSerial library on ESP32 | The ESP32 hosts a terminal over Wi-Fi; a browser connects to its network address. | View device logs or exchange messages over the local network. | Uses the device-hosted WebSerial page and the library’s firmware integration. |
| Browser Web Serial API | A website in a browser requests access to a serial device attached to the computer. | Communicate with a device connected to the host by a supported serial connection. | MDN describes it as limited availability, restricted to secure contexts, and requiring user activation before a site can request a port. |
These are different technologies despite the similar names. The browser API’s secure-context and availability constraints apply to the Web Serial API; they are not a description of the ESP32 WebSerial Wi-Fi library.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The page does not load: verify that the board connected to Wi-Fi, use the IP printed by that board, include
/webserial, and connect the browser device to the same reachable network. - The sketch does not compile: compare the ESP32 core, AsyncTCP, ESPAsyncWebServer, and WebSerial versions against the current installation requirements. In PlatformIO, check the documented strict compatibility-mode setting and resolve incompatible or cross-architecture dependencies.
- The page opens but logs are missing: check that the firmware prints messages and that
WebSerial.begin(&server)andserver.begin()are reached insetup(). - Messages sent from the browser have no effect: confirm that an
onMessagecallback is registered and that its handling code implements the behavior you expect. A callback is optional; receiving commands is not automatic. - USB or initial-upload behavior differs from another ESP32: identify the exact chip and board variant, then consult its vendor information and Espressif’s supported-peripherals matrix. USB capabilities are not identical across the ESP32 family.
