Telegent Systems’ 2011 exit sent different parts of the company in three directions: its Shanghai group joined Spreadtrum Communications, more than 40 U.S.-based employees moved to an unnamed company for a new project, and about a dozen people—including former CEO Ford Tamer and former CTO Samuel Sheng—joined an unnamed spin-off. The August 25, 2011 EE Times account describes the outcome as a sale and a redistribution of teams and assets, not simply a shutdown.
What were the three destinations?
The three-way split involved distinct people, work and assets. EE Times did not name the U.S. company or the spin-off, and its 2011 report does not establish what later became of either.
| Destination | What the 2011 account says went there | What is identified |
|---|---|---|
| Spreadtrum Communications | About 90 Shanghai-based employees, including engineering, marketing and sales staff, and a mobile-TV portfolio of about 70 patents, including pending applications. | Named as the acquirer; the transferred Shanghai group and patent portfolio are described in the EE Times account. |
| Unnamed U.S. company | More than 40 U.S.-based employees moved there for a new project. | The company is not named in the EE Times account. |
| Unnamed spin-off | About a dozen people joined, including former CEO Ford Tamer and former CTO Samuel Sheng. Tamer became executive chairman and Sheng president. | The spin-off is not named in the EE Times account. |
The article mentions speculation that Broadcom might be the unnamed U.S. company, but says Broadcom had not returned EE Times’ calls. That is unconfirmed speculation, not evidence that Broadcom was involved.
Who acquired Telegent, and what did the sale mean?
Spreadtrum Communications acquired Telegent, which EE Times described as an analog mobile-TV chip startup. Former CEO Tamer, former CTO Sheng and board member Reed Hundt rejected the idea that Telegent had simply failed. Tamer characterized the outcome as a success; the article reported that $100 million was distributed among shareholders and employees after the sale. That distribution is not the acquisition price, and the article’s account is not an independently audited transaction summary.

The purchase price remains undisclosed in the report. It discusses a claimed $1 million acquisition payment, but Tamer said that figure was not exactly correct and did not disclose the actual transaction amount. He pointed to liabilities, escrow and inventory as factors in acquisition accounting. The available account therefore does not support a definitive purchase-price figure.
Why did Telegent split three ways?
Chip economics had tightened
Tamer said the average selling price of a Telegent chip had fallen to 60 cents, while the total available market for mobile-TV chips was topping out at $40 million to $50 million. Those are figures he reported about the market around the 2011 exit, not current market measurements. He said the economics made it increasingly difficult for a standalone mobile-TV chip business to work, adding that the price pressure “screams that it has to be a part of another chip – like a baseband chip.”

Competition was intense
Sheng described China’s consumer-chip market as “a hugely competitive market.” His point helps explain why a specialized chip maker faced pressure even as it held a strong position in its niche.
Mobile viewing was moving beyond broadcast
Telegent’s premise was that people would watch mobile television through broadcast signals, analog or digital. Tamer said that premise no longer held as viewers moved toward television streamed over the internet using Wi-Fi or LTE. Hundt, a former FCC chairman and Telegent board member, framed the shift this way: “Mobile devices turned out to be a gateway to the Internet, not to broadcast. Broadcasters could have played a role on mobile. But they missed the window.”

What do the 2011 figures show?
These numbers are historical claims reported by EE Times in 2011; they should not be read as present-day market data. Where the article attributes a figure to an executive or company account, that attribution matters.
- Sales: Telegent reportedly sold 4 million to 5 million mobile-TV chips per month shortly before the acquisition announcement, according to the company’s account cited by EE Times.
- Market share: Tamer estimated that Telegent held 75 percent of its market.
- Average selling price: Tamer put the average at 60 cents per chip.
- Market size: Tamer estimated the total available market for mobile-TV chips at $40 million to $50 million.
- Shanghai workforce: About 90 former Telegent employees there—including engineering, marketing and sales staff—were discussed in connection with Spreadtrum.
- Patents: About 70 mobile-TV-related patents, including pending applications, were described as going to Spreadtrum.
- Other employee destinations: More than 40 U.S.-based employees went to the unnamed company, while about a dozen people joined the unnamed spin-off.
- Post-sale distribution: The article reported $100 million distributed among shareholders and employees after the sale; it should not be confused with the acquisition price.
What remains unknown?
The 2011 account identifies Spreadtrum as the acquirer and describes the other two destinations without naming them. It does not resolve whether the rumored Broadcom connection was real, disclose the final acquisition terms, or establish the later history of the spin-off or the unnamed U.S. company. The defensible account is therefore a historical one: Spreadtrum received the Shanghai organization and mobile-TV intellectual property, while two other groups moved to entities the article left unidentified.
