Choose a PowerShell Write-* command by asking what should receive the output. Return ordinary results as objects on the Success pipeline; use a host display for text meant only for the person at the console; and use the dedicated streams for information, warnings, errors, diagnostics, or progress. These commands are not interchangeable print functions: the stream determines what callers can capture, redirect, or act on.
Choose by destination and purpose
| What you want to do | Use | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Return results to a caller or downstream command | Implicit output or Write-Output |
Objects go to the Success stream. Collections are enumerated by default; -NoEnumerate can preserve a collection as one object in pipeline scenarios. |
| Show presentation text directly in the current host | Write-Host |
Displays text in the host, including optional color. It is not the normal way to return pipeline data. |
| Send information that callers may handle as stream data | Write-Information |
Sends a message on the Information stream; tags can help callers categorize or filter it. |
| Show optional operational detail | Write-Verbose |
Sends detail on the Verbose stream; normally hidden unless enabled. |
| Help a developer troubleshoot code | Write-Debug |
Sends diagnostic output on the Debug stream; normally hidden unless enabled. |
| Flag a less severe issue while ordinarily continuing | Write-Warning |
Sends a warning on the Warning stream; behavior can be changed by warning action settings. |
| Report an error condition | Write-Error |
Sends an error record on the Error stream; whether it affects execution depends on error handling settings and context. |
| Show progress during work | Write-Progress |
Displays progress; it is not a redirectable stream. |
Return data with implicit output or Write-Output
For a function or script that should produce a result, leave the value as an expression or use Write-Output. The objects remain available to the caller and to pipeline commands rather than being reduced to display-only text. Microsoft’s output-stream guidance describes Success as the stream for ordinary command output, and the Write-Output reference advises that the cmdlet is generally unnecessary when an expression already emits its value.
# Return process objects for further filtering or processing
Get-Process | Where-Object CPU -gt 10
If this is the last command in an interactive pipeline, PowerShell displays the returned objects in the console. That visible rendering is only one possible consumer. By default, Write-Output enumerates a collection; use -NoEnumerate when a pipeline scenario needs the collection passed as one object.
Use Write-Host only for host presentation
Use Write-Host when the purpose is to show text to a person in the current PowerShell host, for example a colored heading. Its display depends on the program hosting PowerShell, and it uses an object’s ToString() method. That makes it a poor choice when a caller needs structured objects to filter, export, or otherwise process. Microsoft’s Write-Host documentation distinguishes host display from pipeline output and recommends implicit output or Write-Output for data.

Since Windows PowerShell 5.0, Write-Host is implemented as a wrapper for Write-Information while preserving compatibility. It can be captured or suppressed in relevant ways, but it does not thereby become a substitute for ordinary Success-stream output. In particular, $InformationPreference and -InformationAction do not generally control Write-Host messages; -InformationAction Ignore is the documented suppression exception.
Choose a message stream for communication
Information for manageable messages
Use Write-Information for informational messages that should be distinct from results and available to stream handling. The Information stream was introduced in Windows PowerShell 5.0. Tags can identify message types; by default, $InformationPreference is SilentlyContinue, so information is not normally displayed unless the preference or -InformationAction changes that behavior.

Write-Information 'Configuration loaded.' -Tags 'Startup' -InformationAction Continue
Verbose and debug for opt-in detail
Use Write-Verbose to explain operational steps to someone who opts into detail, and Write-Debug for troubleshooting implementation. Both are ordinarily hidden. A caller can enable the common parameters -Verbose or -Debug; scripts and sessions can also change $VerbosePreference and $DebugPreference.
Write-Verbose 'Checking the application service.'
Warning and error for conditions that need attention
Use Write-Warning for a less severe condition that ordinarily allows execution to continue. Under ordinary settings, a warning is not added to $Error. Use Write-Error to produce an error record. Writing one does not necessarily stop the entire script: handling depends on error action settings and the command’s context. Warning and error behavior can be adjusted through their action preferences and common parameters. See Microsoft’s preference-variable reference.

Write-Error 'The requested configuration was not found.'
Progress for ongoing work
Use Write-Progress for a task that takes time and needs a progress display. Progress is distinct from ordinary message streams and cannot be redirected. Microsoft documents the purposes of diagnostic output and progress in about_Output_Streams and Types of Cmdlet Output.
Redirect or merge streams when the caller needs them
PowerShell assigns numbers to redirectable streams: 1 Success, 2 Error, 3 Warning, 4 Verbose, 5 Debug, and 6 Information. Progress has no stream number. With no number, > redirects Success; n> writes a numbered stream, n>> appends it, and n>&1 merges it into Success.

For PowerShell command output, > is functionally equivalent to piping to Out-File with no extra parameters. There is a version-specific exception worth knowing for native executables: starting in PowerShell 7.4, redirecting native-command stdout preserves byte-stream data instead of having PowerShell interpret or reformat it. Consult Microsoft’s redirection reference when behavior across versions matters.
