Jamf Threat Labs found that an analyzed iOS Predator sample reports specific anti-analysis failures to its command-and-control (C2) infrastructure before cleaning up and exiting. The standardized error system suggests centralized, possibly vendor-managed deployment tooling—but the evidence does not establish whether Intellexa or one of its customers operated that sample’s C2.
What Jamf found in the Predator sample
In an analysis published January 14, 2026, Jamf Threat Labs researchers Shen Yuan and Nir Avraham described an iOS Predator component called CSWatcherSpawner. It runs checks intended to detect conditions that could expose or interfere with the spyware, then reports a specific error to its command infrastructure if a check triggers. The sample subsequently cleans up and terminates. Jamf’s technical analysis describes the behavior and the error-code scheme.
Jamf identified codes in the 301–311 range; codes 302, 303, 305 and 306 were absent from the analyzed sample. The callback gives an operator diagnostic information about why that particular deployment failed. It does not show that Predator autonomously learns from the result or automatically improves an exploit.
What checks can make the sample stop?
Jamf reports that the analyzed sample checks for multiple signs of analysis or an unsuitable environment. These are findings about that sample, not a complete inventory of every Predator version or deployment.

- Developer Mode and jailbreak indicators: Jamf says the sample terminates when Developer Mode is enabled and checks for jailbreak-related files.
- Analysis and security tools: Checks include processes such as Frida,
tcpdumpandnetstat, as well as named mobile-security applications. - Network and debugging conditions: The sample checks for custom proxies, root certificates, and console or debugging conditions.
- Locale: Geographic locale checks can also affect whether it proceeds.
Enabling Developer Mode is not a general-purpose defense recommendation: Jamf’s finding is that this particular sample treats it as a reason to stop, not that changing this setting reliably protects an iPhone.
Does this prove Intellexa ran the C2?
No. The sample’s standardized error taxonomy and callback are observed behaviors; the identity of the server operator is not. Dark Reading’s January 15, 2026 report says Jamf could not determine whether Intellexa operated the C2 directly or whether a customer did.

Jamf vice president of security research Nir Avraham said the consistent taxonomy “typically indicates vendor-controlled or vendor-managed infrastructure,” because maintaining that consistency across independent customer deployments would be difficult. That supports an inference of centralized oversight or standardized tooling, but leaves at least two explanations open:
- Intellexa-operated C2: The vendor may operate the infrastructure and receive deployment diagnostics directly.
- Customer-operated C2 using vendor tooling: A customer may run the server while using a standardized system supplied as part of the Predator suite.
The public sample does not distinguish between those possibilities. “Vendor-controlled” is therefore a reasoned interpretation of the design, not a confirmed attribution of the specific C2.

Why the anti-analysis behavior matters to defenders
Jamf also describes crash-reporter monitoring and suppression of some forensic artifacts, along with SpringBoard hooking intended to hide iOS camera and microphone recording indicators. These features could make analysis harder and reduce the reliability of visible indicators on a device affected by the analyzed sample. A missing indicator or artifact, by itself, should not be treated as proof that no targeted compromise occurred.
The findings are sample-specific: Jamf reverse-engineered a sample rather than reporting a complete audit of Predator infrastructure or an independently observed live deployment. For defenders, the practical significance is that an anti-analysis trigger may cause this sample to report a reason for failure and exit, while related tampering may complicate investigation. The article does not establish that any single listed check or visible symptom can confirm or rule out infection.

How this fits with separate reporting on Intellexa
Other reporting adds context about vendor access, but does not settle who ran this sample’s C2. Google Threat Intelligence Group published related research on Intellexa and Predator on December 3, 2025. Its report provides broader context on the vendor and its spyware activity.
Separately, Amnesty International Security Lab’s December 2025 investigation, based on leaked Intellexa materials, says Intellexa had the ability to remotely access some customer systems, including systems in government customer networks. That investigation concerns broader vendor capabilities; it is not evidence identifying the operator of the C2 in Jamf’s analyzed sample.
