The AMD Radeon RX 590 is a 2018 refresh of Polaris, not a new GPU architecture: it keeps the RX 580’s 2,304 stream processors and 8 GB of GDDR5 while raising clock speeds and power use. In Tom’s Hardware’s launch-era tests, an XFX RX 590 Fatboy beat the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB in that publication’s 1080p and 1440p suite, but the reviewer criticized its efficiency and favored discounted RX 580 cards for value. Those results describe a 2018 test, not a current comparison or a verdict on today’s used-card prices.

RX 590 specifications

AMD lists the Radeon RX 590 as launched on 15 November 2018. It uses a 12 nm process and 4th Gen GCN architecture, part of the Polaris family. Its specifications describe a card aimed at gaming, but do not by themselves establish performance in a particular game or system.

Specification AMD-listed value
Compute units 36
Stream processors 2,304
Texture units 144
Base frequency 1,469 MHz
Boost frequency Up to 1,545 MHz
Memory 8 GB GDDR5
Memory interface 256-bit
Memory speed Up to 8 Gbps
Memory bandwidth Up to 256 GB/s
Launch date 15 November 2018

These are AMD’s generic RX 590 specifications; individual board partners may set different factory clocks, cooling, dimensions, and connector requirements. AMD Radeon RX 590 specifications and support.

How the RX 590 differs from the RX 580

The RX 590 is a higher-clocked Polaris refresh enabled by a move to 12 nm, rather than a new architecture. AMD’s launch announcement positioned the clock increase as the basis for better performance than the RX 580. Its claim of up to 27% more performance than the RX 480 came from AMD’s performance lab: an Intel i7-7700K at 4.2 GHz, 16 GB DDR4-3000, Radeon driver 18.11.1, and Windows 10 on 6 November 2018. That is a manufacturer test claim, not a general expectation for every game or system. AMD Community launch post and test context.

What launch-era benchmarks showed

Tom’s Hardware reviewed an XFX Radeon RX 590 Fatboy 8GB OC+ on 15 November 2018. Its verdict said that this tested card beat the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB across its benchmark suite at 1920×1080 and 2560×1440. The same review criticized the RX 590’s performance per watt, judged it too expensive relative to the RX 580 at the time, and recommended considering deals on RX 580 8GB cards for high-quality Full HD gaming. Read that result as a historical comparison of specific cards, test conditions, games, drivers, and resolutions—not a timeless ranking. The available launch-era findings do not show how the RX 590 compares with current GPUs, nor do they determine whether a particular used RX 590 is good value now. For a present-day comparison, look for benchmarks using the same games and resolution, and weigh board power, cooler noise and temperature, factory clock, physical fit, card condition, price, and return or warranty terms.

Overclocking: what can and cannot be generalized

There is no single guaranteed overclock, stable clock, ideal voltage, or fan setting for every RX 590. Board design and cooling differ, and a factory-overclocked card may already run above AMD’s generic boost specification. For example, MSI lists its Armor 8G OC at up to 1,565 MHz, compared with AMD’s generic boost frequency of up to 1,545 MHz. MSI Radeon RX 590 Armor 8G OC specifications.

Before changing clock, voltage, or fan settings, identify the exact board model and use the manufacturer’s specifications as the starting point. Change settings conservatively and check stability, temperatures, and noise under the games or workloads you actually use; an unstable overclock can cause crashes or visual errors. Results depend on the individual card and system, so do not treat another RX 590’s settings as a reliable target.

Power requirements and fit

Power requirements are board-specific. MSI specifies 220 W power consumption, two 8-pin power connectors, and a 550 W recommended PSU for its Armor 8G OC. Those requirements apply to that model, not every RX 590. The 220 W figure is MSI’s model specification and should not be conflated with AnandTech’s 225 W typical-board-power comparison figure.

  • Check the exact card’s connector count and the PSU’s available native PCIe power leads; do not assume one RX 590 model’s connectors apply to another.
  • Check the PSU recommendation alongside the rest of the system, including its CPU and other components. A wattage recommendation alone does not establish that a particular PSU or cabling setup is suitable.
  • Confirm the card’s length, slot clearance, and case airflow using the exact board specification before buying.

Is an RX 590 worth buying today?

The launch reviews establish what reviewers found in 2018, but they do not establish current pricing, used-card condition, stock, or seller protection. Judge a specific listing rather than relying on the original launch verdict: compare its price with alternatives available in your area, confirm the exact model and working condition, and account for return terms and warranty. If its required connectors, PSU capacity, or physical dimensions do not match your system, the card is not a practical option regardless of benchmark performance.
