You can build and run XMRig on Ubuntu, but you cannot use it to GPU-mine current Electroneum mainnet ETN. Electroneum replaced mining with Proof of Responsibility in 2021, and its current Electroneum Smart Chain (ETN-SC) uses IBFT consensus. XMRig’s GPU support does not change how the network reaches consensus.

Why XMRig cannot mine current ETN

Electroneum’s history records that Proof of Responsibility went live in 2021, replacing mining with a validator network. Its current developer documentation describes ETN-SC as using IBFT consensus. These are not open GPU proof-of-work mining arrangements, so an XMRig configuration or Ubuntu build cannot turn a GPU into a current-mainnet ETN miner. See Electroneum’s history and milestones and its developer documentation.

Electroneum’s migration documentation also distinguishes the older legacy chain: after the migration hard fork, future coinbase emissions on that system go to a burn address. Old mining instructions should therefore not be treated as a way to earn current mainnet ETN. Electroneum migration documentation.

What XMRig’s GPU support does—and does not—mean

XMRig documents AMD GPU mining through OpenCL and NVIDIA GPU mining through an external CUDA plugin. It also documents CPU mining. Those are backend capabilities, not universal coin support: a coin or network must use an algorithm and mining arrangement that XMRig supports. XMRig miner documentation and XMRig’s algorithm list.

Electroneum documents Ethash proof-of-work as an option for private ETN-SC networks, not as the consensus mechanism of current mainnet. Ethash is not included in XMRig’s published algorithm list. Thus, that private-network option does not provide an XMRig route to mining ETN mainnet, either. Electroneum developer documentation.

Build XMRig on Ubuntu for supported uses

If your goal is to compile XMRig for a supported coin or an appropriate development setup, the official Ubuntu basic build guide lists the following packages:

Rank #2
NVIDIA TITAN V VOLTA 12GB HBM2 VIDEO CARD
  • Original box, manual, adapter, and static shield bag included
  • git
  • build-essential
  • cmake
  • libuv1-dev
  • libssl-dev
  • libhwloc-dev

The source-build outline below follows that guide; it builds XMRig but does not enable current ETN mainnet mining. Consult the guide for current details and any prerequisites that apply to your Ubuntu version: XMRig’s Ubuntu build instructions.

  1. Install the listed dependencies using Ubuntu’s package manager.
  2. Clone the XMRig source repository with Git.
  3. Create a build directory inside the source tree and change into it.
  4. Run cmake .. to configure the build.
  5. Compile with make -j$(nproc).

For NVIDIA GPU use, the guide points to installing CUDA and building the separate xmrig-cuda plugin. XMRig recommends a JSON configuration file because command-line options do not cover every feature. Follow the official Ubuntu build guide and miner configuration documentation for those supported-use details.

Keep the three Electroneum scenarios separate

  • Current mainnet: ETN-SC uses IBFT; it is not documented as an open GPU proof-of-work network.
  • Legacy chain: migration documentation says future coinbase emissions after the migration hard fork go to a burn address; legacy instructions do not establish a current way to earn mainnet ETN.
  • Private ETN-SC network: Ethash may be an option for a private network, but that differs from current mainnet, and XMRig’s published algorithms do not include Ethash.

Before attempting a private-network experiment, confirm that you are working with a private ETN-SC network and its documented configuration rather than a public mainnet pool or wallet setup. The available documentation does not establish an XMRig configuration, pool address, wallet procedure, hashrate, or profitability for ETN mainnet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to Use XMRig for ETN GPU Mining on Ubuntu?

You cannot use XMRig to GPU-mine current Electroneum mainnet ETN. Electroneum replaced mining with Proof of Responsibility in 2021, and current ETN-SC uses IBFT. XMRig can be built on Ubuntu for supported uses, but that does not create a mainnet ETN mining path.
