What Klavaro teaches
Klavaro divides practice into four types. Rather than treating typing as a single speed test, it moves from recognizing key positions to handling varied sequences and typing complete text.
Basic course: learn key positions
The basic course uses random character sequences to help you memorize where keys are. The project describes this practice as independent of a specific keyboard layout, making it a starting point for learners who are still building familiarity with the keyboard.
Adaptability: practice varied combinations
Adaptability exercises ask you to enter random strings using designated keys. They help you practice combinations beyond a small set of familiar patterns.

Speed: type in a familiar context
Speed practice lets you work in a familiar environment or language. You can supply your own text, including text in a language the application does not support.
Fluidness: focus on an even rhythm
Fluidness practice uses complete paragraphs. Klavaro requires spelling errors to be corrected before you continue, and the project emphasizes maintaining an even typing rhythm. You can load external text for this module, too.

How to use Klavaro for practice
- Match the layout. Choose the preset that corresponds to your physical keyboard, or configure a layout if you use a less common arrangement.
- Start with key positions. Use the basic course to get familiar with where characters are located before concentrating on speed.
- Build flexibility. Try adaptability drills to practice varied strings and combinations.
- Add contextual practice. Use speed exercises for familiar text or language, and load your own material when you want to practice specific content.
- Work on complete passages. Use fluidness practice to type paragraphs, correct spelling errors as required, and work toward a steady rhythm.
- Review your practice. Klavaro saves characteristics from completed exercises and displays them graphically, so you can review your activity over time.
Keyboard layouts and your own text
The project lists QWERTY, Dvorak, QWERTZ, AZERTY, JTSUKEN, Colemak and AlphaGrip5 layout families. It also describes a layout editor for configuring key positions and saving a layout as a text file. If your keyboard does not match a listed preset, configuring a layout can help you practice against the keys you actually use.
For speed and fluidness exercises, you can select or paste local text instead of relying only on built-in material. This is useful for practicing in a preferred language or with passages that reflect your everyday typing.

Progress charts and the contest option
Klavaro records characteristics from completed exercises and presents them in charts. The final practice module can rank users locally on one shared machine, or send data to a web server for a public ranking. The project describes that web-server option for ranking; it does not say that all practice data is automatically uploaded.

The official project page lists source code version 3.14 and a Windows installer version 3.13. These are separate platform-specific artifacts, not one universal version number. The project directs users seeking binaries or ports for Linux, macOS/DarwinPorts and other systems to their operating-system repositories or ports. The listed materials do not establish a native macOS installer.
SourceForge reports a project last-update date of 2026-08-28; that listing date is not the publication date of a specific release. Check the official Klavaro project page and your operating system’s package source for the artifact currently available for your platform.
License and practical fit
Klavaro is free software. Its repository identifies the license as GNU GPL version 3 or later, while SourceForge labels it GPLv3. It is a desktop typing tutor rather than a general language-learning course: its documented focus is keyboard practice through drills, text entry and progress charts.
You need a suitable keyboard to do the exercises, but no special model is specified. If you already have a computer keyboard that matches the layout you want to practice, there is no stated need to buy different hardware.
