What works depends on the exact action, Android version, phone maker’s software, and permissions the app can obtain. Start by checking whether your chosen app supports the precise action you want; some routines need an Android permission, and others may require an ADB grant.
How to choose an Android automation method
Before installing or configuring an app, write down three parts of the routine:
- Trigger: What should start it, such as a time, location, or app event?
- Action: Which exact setting or task should change?
- Run conditions: Must it work with the screen off or without you confirming anything?
Then check the automation app’s current action list for that exact action on your phone and Android release. Android’s permission reference shows that some operations are protected or limited to particular roles. An app may be able to open a Settings page without being allowed to change the setting itself.

Can Tasker change Android settings without root?
Tasker is a flexible option for building trigger-and-action routines, but its availability of an action does not guarantee that Android will let it perform that action on every phone. Check the exact action in Tasker’s current documentation and confirm which permissions it requires for your Android version and device.

Detecting which app is open
Tasker documents app detection through Usage Stats or Accessibility Service. Its FAQ and troubleshooting guide explains these methods and how to enable the relevant Android access. Follow the method Tasker specifies for your setup; behavior may differ with particular apps or custom ROM configurations.
When does an automation app need ADB?
ADB is not required for every routine. Use it only when the app’s instructions say the action needs a development permission that you cannot grant through an ordinary Android permission prompt. LlamaLab Automate documents ways to grant additional permissions, including a privileged-service route and a command run from a connected computer; follow its current ADB instructions rather than guessing a command.

ADB stands for Android Debug Bridge. Android Developers describes it as “a versatile command-line tool that lets you communicate with a device.” It connects an Android device to a workstation for developer operations, using USB or, on supported setups, wireless debugging. Can you use wireless ADB instead of a cable?
Yes. Android 11 and later support wireless debugging with a pairing workflow. The phone and workstation must be on the same network, and you must pair them using the pairing code or QR option shown by Android. See Google’s wireless debugging instructions.

USB debugging is another option: connect the phone to the workstation, enable USB debugging, and approve the workstation’s authorization prompt on the phone. Use a cable and ports that support data, not charging only. Android’s USB debugging instructions cover the connection process. The newer wireless pairing flow is specifically documented for Android 11 and later; do not assume the same steps apply to older releases.
Why can’t an automation app toggle a setting?
- The app cannot perform that protected operation. Android restricts some permissions or reserves them for specific roles, so the app may be able to navigate to a setting but not change it. Check the required permission and whether the app documents support for the action.
- The action needs an extra grant. Some actions require a development permission. Use the app’s instructions to determine whether ADB is needed and which grant applies.
- The phone maker or Android release behaves differently. A setting that works on one device or OS version may not be exposed or may behave differently on another. Check compatibility for your exact model and software.
- The trigger depends on app detection. If a routine should respond to the foreground app, check whether the automation app needs Usage Stats or Accessibility Service access and whether the method works with that app and ROM.
- The method relies on a non-SDK interface. Android restricts non-SDK interfaces, so access and reliability can change. Avoid building an important routine around an undocumented interface; see the non-SDK interface restrictions.
Use Accessibility Service deliberately
Accessibility access can enable app detection or other specific automation functions, but it is not a blanket permission to automate anything. Google Play’s policy says: “This does not prohibit deterministic, rule-based automation, where behavior follows a static, human-defined script (for example, "If Trigger X occurs, perform Action Y").” The policy also requires a narrow, clearly understood purpose and prohibits autonomous initiation, planning, and execution of actions or decisions through the Accessibility API. Apps covered by the policy may also need disclosures and declarations. Read Google Play’s AccessibilityService API policy before enabling this access for an app.

Check reliability and revoke access
Once the routine is configured, verify it on the phone and OS version you intend to use. Check that it behaves as expected under the conditions that matter, including after a reboot or an app or system update, and confirm what happens if its permission is revoked. These results can differ across devices, so a working setup on someone else’s phone is not proof that yours will behave the same way.
If you used ADB, Android lets you revoke debugging authorizations in developer settings; Automate also documents revoking the access used for its ADB setup.
