The documented performance-based ExamUI walkthrough applies to the Istio Certified Associate (ICA) exam. It describes an exam console and a remote desktop with tools such as a Linux terminal, Firefox, and VSCodium. Linux Foundation’s exam-interface mapping lists ICA but not JSNAD or JSNSD, so do not assume the ICA walkthrough or its resource rules apply to those OpenJS exams.
What the ICA ExamUI includes
Linux Foundation describes the performance-based ExamUI as two parts: exam-console functions and a remote desktop virtual machine. The desktop includes a Linux terminal emulator, Firefox for permitted resources, a virtual keyboard, and VSCodium. A ReadMe tab appears by default; review its exam-specific instructions before beginning tasks. The official performance-based ExamUI guide contains the interface details, which can change.
Terminal and editor
You can work in the Linux terminal or use VSCodium, whose integrated terminal is also available. Installing extensions in VSCodium is disabled and prohibited. In the Linux terminal, use Ctrl+Shift+C to copy and Ctrl+Shift+V to paste. In other desktop applications, use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. If special characters are unreliable with your physical keyboard, the virtual keyboard is available.
Browser and display controls
The supplied Firefox browser includes Ctrl+F find-in-page and a translation extension. The guide also describes a Reset Desktop control for technical issues loading the desktop, options to resize the content panel, and display settings to fit or reset the desktop. These are documented interface features, not a guarantee that you can resolve every delivery problem yourself.

When the ICA timer starts—and what happens if you disconnect
The ExamUI tour begins when the exam is first released. The timer starts only after you complete or hide the tour. The interface displays alerts when 30, 15, and 5 minutes remain.
A break request does not stop the timer. Linux Foundation’s guide also states: “The exam timer will not pause, and there is no way to ADD time back to the timer in the event of a system disconnect during your exam.” Plan around that limitation and review the latest candidate instructions before test day.

Resources allowed during ICA
For ICA, Linux Foundation lists Istio Documentation, the Istio Blog, Kubernetes Documentation, and task-specific material in the Quick Reference box as permitted resources under its conditions. Use them for independent work, not third-party assistance or research, and browse only material accessible from within the exam VM. The guide allows documentation search functions but prohibits opening external search results. See the ICA allowed-resources guidance.
These are ICA-specific rules. They do not establish what resources are permitted in JSNAD or JSNSD.

How JSNAD and JSNSD differ from ICA
The exams assess different skills. A Linux Foundation article published in 2020 describes JSNAD and JSNSD as online, remotely proctored, performance-based exams lasting two hours each. Because that article is dated, treat those details as background rather than a substitute for current candidate instructions.
| Exam | Focus described by Linux Foundation | Interface evidence in the reviewed official material |
|---|---|---|
| ICA | Istio certification; exam-specific tasks and resources are covered in the ICA guidance. | Listed in Linux Foundation’s performance-based ExamUI mapping, with a detailed interface tour. |
| JSNAD | Node.js application development, with emphasis on Node.js core APIs. | Not listed in the reviewed performance-based ExamUI mapping; the 2020 OpenJS article does not provide a current detailed interface walkthrough. |
| JSNSD | RESTful Node.js servers and services, including microservices, with emphasis on security practices. | Not listed in the reviewed performance-based ExamUI mapping; the 2020 OpenJS article does not provide a current detailed interface walkthrough. |
The mapping’s omission of JSNAD and JSNSD means only that the page does not list them; it does not establish what software or interface those exams currently use. The exam descriptions come from Linux Foundation’s OpenJS certification overview. That 2020 article also mentioned a JSNAD preparation course in English, but it does not confirm whether the course is currently available.

What to verify before an OpenJS exam
For JSNAD or JSNSD, rely on the current exam-specific instructions you receive rather than transferring ICA’s desktop tools, timer details, or allowed-resource list. The reviewed material establishes the exams’ focus and gives broad format information, but it does not establish their current detailed interface, desktop software, or permitted resources.
