NewSID was a free Sysinternals utility for changing a Windows computer’s SID, but it is retired and Microsoft says it is no longer available for download. Microsoft does not support Windows images prepared with NewSID; it supports images prepared with Sysprep. For current deployment guidance, use Microsoft’s documentation rather than an archived NewSID executable.
What was NewSID?
NewSID was a Win32 utility from Sysinternals intended for Windows computers deployed from disk clones. It generated a new computer SID and replaced references to the previous computer SID in the Registry and file security descriptors. It could also rename the computer and offered a SID synchronization feature.
The official documentation is Mark Russinovich’s NewSID v4.10 page, published November 1, 2006. It describes the utility as historical software, not a current Windows deployment tool.
Is NewSID still available, and should you use it?
No. Microsoft’s page says NewSID has been retired and is no longer available for download. Its documentation also states: “Regarding SIDs, Microsoft does not support images that are prepared using NewSID, we only support images that are prepared using SysPrep.” That support distinction makes NewSID inappropriate for preparing Windows images today.

Do not treat copies on third-party archive sites as a safe or supported download. The old utility required administrative privileges and changed Registry entries and file security descriptors. Russinovich warned users to make a full backup and stated, “Important: Note that while we have thoroughly tested NewSID, you must use it at your own risk.”
NewSID and Sysprep: the supported distinction
| Approach | Role described in the documentation | Microsoft support status | Availability and current procedure |
|---|---|---|---|
| NewSID | Historical utility for changing the SID of an already installed computer, often after cloning; it could also rename the computer. | Microsoft says it does not support images prepared using NewSID. | Retired and no longer available for download. The 2006 page does not establish a current procedure. |
| Sysprep | Microsoft’s supported approach for preparing images for deployment. | Microsoft says it supports images prepared using Sysprep. | For operational steps, consult current Windows Sysprep guidance; the historical NewSID page is not a version-specific Sysprep guide. |
The distinction is not that the old page provides a step-by-step, current comparison. It does not. It establishes Microsoft’s support position: use Sysprep-prepared images rather than NewSID-prepared images, and follow current Windows deployment documentation for the procedure applicable to your version.
What did the historical NewSID procedure involve?
The NewSID v4.10 documentation required administrative privileges, advised making a full backup, and warned that IISAdmin had to be stopped before running the utility on a system using that service. Its documented automatic command was newsid /a [newname], where the optional name changed the computer name. This command describes the retired utility only; it is not a current recommendation.

The page also described generating a random 96-bit value for the computer SID’s three 32-bit subauthorities. These are implementation details from the 2006 documentation and should not be generalized into current Windows deployment instructions.

What JSI Tip 6090 can be verified?
The exact original wording and publication date of JSI Tip 6090 could not be verified. The Microsoft documentation establishes NewSID’s history, retirement, and support limitations, but those statements should not be attributed to the JSI tip. Microsoft’s separate NewSID end-of-life announcement was first published September 18, 2009, and updated June 27, 2019.
