Protecting an NFT wallet takes two kinds of care: keep the recovery phrase private, and scrutinize every transaction or permission before signing. A hardware wallet can help protect the signing key and show transaction details, but it cannot make a malicious approval safe once you authorize it.

Protect the recovery phrase first

Your secret recovery phrase can restore a self-custody wallet and give control over its assets. Anyone who obtains it may be able to take that control. Never share it or type it into a website, email, direct message, support chat, or a supposed wallet-validation form. OpenSea says it will never ask for the phrase, and MetaMask says it is needed only for specific wallet setup or recovery tasks—not ordinary support or dApp use. See OpenSea’s NFT safety guidance and MetaMask’s advice on identifying its genuine wallet.

  • Keep the phrase private and offline; do not save a photo or cloud copy.
  • Do not follow an unsolicited message asking you to install software or “verify” your phrase.
  • If you believe the phrase was exposed, treat the wallet as compromised. Create a new wallet with a newly generated phrase and move assets using the provider’s verified official instructions. Revoking approvals alone does not secure a wallet whose phrase has been stolen.

Verify the wallet and website before connecting

Download wallet software only from the provider’s official website or official app-store listing. Reach a marketplace through a known address you type yourself or a trusted bookmark, then check the URL before connecting or signing. OpenSea warns about email-driven transaction prompts and unsolicited social-media messages. MetaMask notes that its genuine transaction popup is initiated by the user and that a prompt with little context is suspicious; these are warning signs, not proof that a polished page is safe.

Before approving a request, check the site origin, the asset involved, the spender or contract, and the permission being requested. A fake mint, claim, or listing page can describe an action misleadingly. Some signatures may grant permission that is used later, so the absence of a gas-paying transaction is not evidence that a request is harmless. Read MetaMask’s signature-phishing guidance and Ledger’s explanation of ice phishing.

Should you use a hardware wallet for NFTs?

A hardware wallet is a useful additional layer for people holding valuable assets or wanting signing to require a dedicated device. It can keep the signing key apart from an internet-connected computer and, depending on the wallet and transaction, display details for review. It does not stop phishing or prevent you from approving a malicious contract: the owner still has to understand and inspect the request.

When comparing hardware-backed, software-only, or separate interaction wallets, consider where keys are held, what transaction details are shown before signing, whether the supported networks and wallet apps fit your activity, how recovery works if a device is lost, and how easy the setup is to use correctly. If available, inspect the approval and spender address on the device itself. A compromised or misleading host interface can still obscure what it asks you to sign, so the device screen matters. The cited guidance supports category-level benefits, not a claim that one model is best or compatible with every chain or wallet app.

Understand NFT approvals before granting them

An approval gives an app or smart contract permission to access or move an asset within the approval’s scope. ERC-721 and ERC-1155 permissions can support marketplace listings or transfers. A token-specific allowance is narrower than a broad operator permission that can apply across a collection; broad rights can put more NFTs at risk. Approvals are not inherently malicious—some are needed for intended marketplace actions—but prefer a narrower permission when one is offered and avoid signing requests whose purpose or scope you cannot verify.

Check the spender and scope rather than relying on a page’s description. OpenSea’s guide explains Ethereum approval management, while MetaMask discusses misleading signatures that may be abused later: OpenSea: revoke token approvals and permissions on Ethereum.

Review and revoke Ethereum approvals

OpenSea’s Ethereum guide describes using Etherscan’s Token Approval tool to review ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155 approvals and submit a revoke transaction. The tool is third-party, and revoking an approval requires a gas fee. The process is specifically about Ethereum; it should not be assumed to cover other chains or every signature type.

  1. Navigate to Etherscan’s Token Approval tool through a verified route, rather than an unsolicited link. OpenSea’s guide is here.
  2. Connect the wallet you want to review, and confirm the wallet is on the intended network.
  3. Inspect the listed approvals and identify the spender and asset scope. Do not revoke an item you do not understand without checking the current official guidance for that wallet and chain.
  4. If you decide to revoke, verify the network and transaction details in your wallet or signing device before confirming. The revoke transaction incurs gas.

Removing a marketplace’s permission can mean you must approve it again before using that marketplace. For other networks, use current official guidance for that chain rather than assuming the Ethereum checker applies.

If you signed a suspicious request

  1. Stop interacting with the suspicious site, and do not follow its further instructions.
  2. From a clean, trusted device, review account activity and active approvals using official wallet guidance for the relevant network.
  3. Revoke active permissions that you can identify and no longer trust, after verifying the transaction details.
  4. If your recovery phrase may have been disclosed, prioritize creating a new wallet and migrating assets; revocation cannot neutralize a stolen phrase.

If assets have already been transferred away, a revoke transaction does not recover them. Some permit-style signatures may have account-specific limits on revocation, so consult current official wallet documentation for your chain and situation.
