Those gains are specific to the named methods and workloads—not a promise that every archive operation runs faster. Version 25.01 followed on August 3, 2025, with a symbolic-link security change. As of October 4, 2026, 7-Zip’s official site lists version 26.03 as its current Windows download, so version 25 is no longer current.
What changed in 7-Zip 25.00?
The 7-Zip project’s 25.00 release notes, dated July 5, 2025, describe changes to Windows CPU-thread use, compression speed, archive support, and bug and vulnerability fixes.
Windows can use more than 64 CPU threads for specified tasks
On Windows, 7-Zip 25.00 can use more than 64 CPU threads when compressing to ZIP, 7z, or XZ archives, and when running the 7-Zip benchmark. On systems with multiple processor groups and more than 64 CPU threads, the project says it distributes threads across those groups.
This is a targeted improvement for high-thread-count Windows systems and the listed operations. It does not mean all PCs—or all 7-Zip tasks—will use more threads or become faster.

How much faster is 7-Zip v25?
The project’s 25.00 release notes report that “bzip2 compression speed was increased by 15-40%” and that “deflate (zip/gz) compression speed was increased by 1-3%.” These are the project’s stated improvements, not independent benchmark results. The notes do not give detailed test conditions, such as hardware, dataset, or a complete benchmark protocol, so treat the percentages as method-specific release claims rather than guaranteed results on your files or PC.
ZIP, CPIO, and FAT archive support was improved
The release notes say support for ZIP, CPIO, and FAT archives was improved, and that bugs and vulnerabilities were fixed. They do not describe these formats as newly added in version 25.00.

What changed in 7-Zip 25.01?
Version 25.01, released August 3, 2025, changed symbolic-link handling to provide greater security when extracting archives. The official 25.01 release note documents the -snld20 switch as a way to bypass default security checks when creating symbolic links. That switch concerns creation; it should not be treated as a general way to bypass extraction checks.
Is 7-Zip 25 still the latest version?
No. The official 7-Zip download page lists version 26.03, dated September 3, 2026, for Windows x64, x86, and ARM64. The official 7-Zip site describes the program as free and open source, with no registration or payment required. For a current installation, use the official download page and its listed release rather than assuming 25.00 or 25.01 is the newest version.

A SourceForge issue opened August 21, 2025 describes slow first-run ZIP creation with 25.01 on a Windows Server EC2 instance using a cold EBS cache and a folder of roughly 10,000–15,000 small files. The reporter said a cold first run took several minutes and a warm repeat took roughly 17–20 seconds; reported 25.00 runs took about 24–29 seconds. The issue was open on the page reviewed.
This is one user’s account of a particular cloud-server workload, not a representative benchmark or an established general regression. The report does not establish the cause, and its figures should not be used to predict performance on other systems.
