It is not a fitness exercise or the high-voltage arc device also called a Jacob’s Ladder.
Materials and suggested dimensions
Position is Everything Team’s May 26, 2026 guide suggests six similarly sized wooden blocks, each about 3 inches long, 1½ inches wide, and ¼–⅜ inch thick. These are that guide’s beginner-project recommendations, not a tested standard.
- Six pre-cut wooden craft rectangles, or wood you can cut into matching blocks
- Three narrow ribbon strips about ¼–⅜ inch wide; the guide suggests grosgrain, thin fabric tape, or sturdy satin ribbon and advises against stretchy ribbon
- Fine-grit sandpaper for smoothing rough edges
- Scissors and a flat work surface
Pre-cut rectangles avoid the need to cut wood. If you cut your own, use suitable tools and make the pieces as uniform as possible. The guide does not specify ribbon lengths or a particular adhesive, so check the arrangement and movement before deciding how to secure the ends.
How to assemble the ribbon hinges
- Prepare the blocks. Make sure all six are alike in size, then lightly sand rough edges so they are smooth.
- Lay out the first connection. Place two blocks flat with a small gap between them. On one face, run a ribbon down the center of the pair, crossing the gap. On the opposite face, use two ribbons near the sides, also crossing the gap. Keep the strips flat.
- Continue the alternating pattern. Add the next block and arrange the ribbon connections so the center strip on one face alternates with the two side strips on the other face from one connection to the next. Repeat along the chain. Each adjacent pair needs a hinge arrangement that lets it pivot as the blocks flip.
- Check each joint as you go. Move the connected blocks through a pivot before continuing. Adjust the ribbon so it has enough slack to bend, but is not so loose that the blocks wobble or twist.
The guide describes this alternating center-and-side pattern but does not provide a measured gap or a tested fastening method. Keep ribbon placement consistent and avoid folds under the blocks, which can interfere with movement.

Test and troubleshoot the tumble
Hold one end and flip the top block to see whether the sequence travels through the chain. If it catches, twists, or stops, inspect the connections individually rather than changing every strip at once.
- A block will not flip: Check whether ribbon is too tight or folded beneath it; adjust the tension and lay the strip flat.
- The chain wobbles or twists: Look for overly loose ribbon, uneven block sizes, or off-center placement. The guide recommends consistent blocks and carefully placed ribbon.
- A block catches: Check for rough edges, misaligned strips, or a ribbon crossing that restricts the pivot. Smooth the edge or reposition the ribbon, then test that joint again.
Once the blocks tumble freely, decorate them if desired, keeping paint or other finishes clear of the ribbon hinges so they can still flex.

Choosing blocks and ribbon
The project guide’s material suggestions are practical options rather than a tested comparison. Pre-cut rectangles are the simpler route if you want to skip cutting; self-cut wood gives you control over dimensions but requires appropriate cutting tools and careful matching. For ribbon, choose a narrow flexible strip that bends at each joint without stretching excessively. The guide names grosgrain, thin fabric tape, and sturdy satin ribbon as possibilities, and advises avoiding stretch ribbon.
