To dry clothes indoors without making your home damp, remove as much water as possible in the wash, then spread the clothes on an airer in one room you can ventilate. Close the room door to limit moisture spreading, open a window slightly when it is safe and practical, and keep vents clear. A dehumidifier can help manage moisture, but persistent damp or mould may need a housing or ventilation problem fixed—not just a change in laundry habits.

How to dry clothes indoors without causing damp

  1. Dry clothes outside when practical. Indoor air-drying adds moisture to your home. NICE recommends avoiding moisture-producing activities such as indoor clothes drying where possible, or improving ventilation when they cannot be avoided. NICE guidance.
  2. Remove more water before hanging. If your washing machine and garments allow it, use an additional spin cycle. The Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) suggests spinning clothes twice when outdoor drying is not possible. Follow your appliance and garment instructions. CSE energy-saving advice.
  3. Choose one ventilated room and use an airer. Spread garments out so air can move around them. Close the internal door to contain moisture and, when possible and safe, open the room window slightly. A bathroom can work if its door can be closed and it has a window; the right room depends on your home’s layout and ventilation. National Energy Action (NEA); CSE; Oxford City Council.
  4. Keep designed ventilation paths clear. Do not block trickle vents or airbricks. Use an available extractor fan as appropriate, and ventilate in a way that is safe for your home and circumstances. England’s home ventilation guide says trickle vents should be left open and unblocked. England home ventilation guide.
  5. Let clothes dry fully before storing them. Put them away in wardrobes or drawers only when completely dry. CSE.

Where to dry clothes indoors

Use a room where you can contain the laundry and manage ventilation. NEA and CSE recommend a drying rack in a room with the door closed and a window opened when possible; Oxford City Council identifies a bathroom as one option if it can be closed off and ventilated. These are practical choices, not a rule that one room suits every home. Avoid placing an airer where it blocks a vent or prevents air from moving around the clothes.

Why wet laundry can make a home damp

Water evaporating from laundry enters the indoor air. Cooking, bathing and other everyday activities add moisture too. When moist air cannot escape, it can condense on colder surfaces, particularly in winter; condensation is one common cause of damp and mould. Ventilation helps carry moisture out, while a contained drying room limits how far it spreads through the home. England government guidance on damp and mould; Oxford City Council; England home ventilation guide.

NEA says indoor clothes drying “can add up to 10-15 litres of water into your home every week.” This is NEA’s estimate, not a universal measured amount: its page does not identify the original study or the household conditions behind the figure. NEA.

Which indoor drying option should you use?

Option How it helps What to know
Outdoor line or drying space Dries clothes outside the home. Preferred when practical because it avoids adding laundry moisture indoors. NICE; CSE.
Indoor airer or rack Holds laundry for air-drying. Use it in one room where you can close the door and ventilate when possible and safe. It does not remove moisture from the air. NEA; CSE.
Dehumidifier Collects moisture from room air. Can be useful in a room where washing dries or condensation is a problem. It does not repair inadequate ventilation or other building issues. England government guidance; NEA; CSE.
Tumble dryer Dries laundry mechanically. Oxford City Council says a vented dryer should exhaust through an external wall. The cited guidance does not compare dryer types, running costs or performance. Oxford City Council.

What to avoid when drying clothes indoors

  • Do not dry wet clothes directly on radiators. NEA and Oxford City Council advise against it. NEA; Oxford City Council.
  • Avoid portable gas or LPG heaters. CSE and NEA note that these heaters can add moisture. CSE; NEA.
  • Do not assume an open window is always appropriate. Ventilate when it is possible and safe; homes and circumstances differ. Keep background vents unblocked even when a window is closed. NICE; England home ventilation guide.

When damp or mould needs more than a laundry change

If condensation, damp or mould persists despite reasonable steps to manage indoor moisture, the cause may include inadequate ventilation, heating, insulation or another building deficiency. The right response depends on the dwelling; a dehumidifier or different drying routine cannot fix every underlying problem. For rented housing in England, government guidance says it is unreasonable to blame damp and mould on “lifestyle choices.” Everyday laundry contributes moisture, but the condition of the home also matters. England government guidance.

Damp and mould can affect the airways and lungs, as well as the eyes and skin. Children, older adults and people with certain health conditions may be at greater risk of more severe effects, according to the same England guidance. If you rent and the problem continues, contact your landlord rather than treating household adjustments as a substitute for addressing underlying causes.
