Choose the iPhone 15 if you want a smaller, lighter phone and do not need a long-range optical zoom, a 120Hz display, advanced video formats, or faster wired data transfers. Choose the iPhone 15 Pro Max if those features matter enough to justify its larger body and extra 50g. Both are 2023 models; this comparison is based on Apple’s published specifications, not hands-on testing.

Which is better, iPhone 15 or 15 Pro Max?
Neither is better for every buyer. The iPhone 15 is the more practical fit if you value a lighter, more compact phone and its display and camera options cover what you do. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is the stronger fit if you specifically want a large 120Hz display, a dedicated 5x telephoto camera, Pro capture formats, USB 3 data speeds, or Apple Intelligence eligibility.
Choose iPhone 15 if you want a smaller everyday phone
- You prefer a 6.1-inch screen and a 171g device.
- You do not routinely need optical reach beyond the 2x view enabled by the main camera.
- You do not need ProMotion, ProRAW, ProRes or Log recording.
- You rarely move large files over a cable and do not need Apple Intelligence eligibility.
The standard model still includes an OLED display, Dynamic Island, A16 Bionic and a 48MP main camera. Apple’s specifications list the relevant features at iPhone 15 – Tech Specs.

- You photograph distant subjects and want a dedicated 5x optical telephoto lens.
- You want the larger Always-On display with adaptive ProMotion up to 120Hz.
- You record or edit using ProRAW, ProRes or Log formats.
- You transfer large files over USB-C and can use a cable that supports USB 3.
- You want the model Apple currently lists as supporting Apple Intelligence, subject to software, language and regional availability.
These are capability-based reasons to choose the Pro Max, not proof that it takes better photos in every situation or is universally faster. Apple’s specifications establish which features each model supports, not comparative image tests or performance benchmarks.
iPhone 15 vs 15 Pro Max camera: what changes?
Both phones have a 48MP main camera and an ultra-wide camera. The iPhone 15 can provide a 2x telephoto view using its quad-pixel main sensor. The Pro Max adds a dedicated 12MP 5x optical telephoto camera, equivalent to 120mm, which is the more meaningful distinction if you often frame faraway people, wildlife or details.

The Pro Max also supports Apple ProRAW and ProRes/Log recording. Those formats are most relevant when you intend to edit your photos or video and want the additional capture options. If you mainly take everyday photos and do not need a long optical zoom, the specifications do not by themselves establish that you should pay more or accept a larger phone.

Apple rates iPhone 15 for up to 20 hours of video playback and up to 16 hours of streamed-video playback. Its iPhone 15 Pro Max figures are up to 29 hours and up to 25 hours, respectively. These are manufacturer-stated maximum playback estimates, not independently measured runtimes or a guarantee of how long your phone will last; actual use varies.

USB-C is not the same speed on both phones
Both models have USB-C, but their wired data capabilities differ. Apple lists iPhone 15 as USB 2, up to 480Mb/s, and iPhone 15 Pro Max as USB 3, up to 10Gb/s. To reach the higher stated speed, you need a USB-C cable that supports USB 3; the connector alone does not ensure that speed. This difference matters most when transferring large files, such as high-resolution video. It is separate from USB-C charging, which both phones support.

Is the iPhone 15 Pro Max worth it?
It is worth considering when you will regularly use its larger 120Hz display, dedicated 5x zoom, advanced capture formats, USB 3 transfers or Apple Intelligence eligibility. If those are not needs you can name, the iPhone 15’s smaller size and lower weight may be the more useful trade-off. The specifications establish feature differences, but they do not settle value without a current price for your region, storage choice and device condition.
Compare actual listings for the same storage capacity and condition. Check whether the phone is carrier-locked, who is selling it, what warranty applies and what the return terms are. For a used or refurbished phone, also check battery health, activation or ownership lock status, disclosed repair history, included accessories and the seller’s return period.
What to check before buying
- Fit: Compare the 6.1-inch, 171g iPhone 15 with the 6.7-inch, 221g Pro Max in light of your preference for screen size and portability.
- Storage: The iPhone 15 starts at 128GB; the Pro Max starts at 256GB. Match capacity to your photos, videos, apps and files.
- Price and condition: Prices and stock vary, so compare equivalent storage, condition, seller, lock status, warranty and return terms rather than assuming either model is always the better value.
- Carrier and region: SIM configuration and network bands can vary by device region. Verify the specific model works with your carrier.
- AI availability: Apple lists Apple Intelligence for Pro Max, but software version, language and region can affect availability. Check Apple’s current information before buying for this feature.
- Transfer workflow: If USB 3 speed is a reason to pick Pro Max, confirm your data cable supports USB 3.
