“SOF at ELCE” refers to Sound Open Firmware material presented at Open Source Summit + Embedded Linux Conference Europe in 2018. The talk introduced SOF as open-source audio digital signal processing firmware and driver infrastructure; a related demo showed IIR and FIR equalizer examples. The slides document what was presented then, not today’s platform support or release status.
What does SOF mean in “SOF at ELCE”?
Here, SOF means Sound Open Firmware. The project archive lists Liam Girdwood’s “Sound Open Firmware” presentation and an “Audio Demo” by Seppo Ingalsuo and Ranjani Sridharan at Open Source Summit + Embedded Linux Conference Europe 2018. The archive’s presentations index identifies the event material.
Girdwood described SOF as “an open source audio digital signal processing firmware and driver infrastructure.” The 2018 presentation slides frame it as infrastructure for audio processing on DSP-based systems, rather than a consumer audio device or standalone equalizer application.
What did the 2018 SOF presentation cover?
Architecture and audio pipelines
The talk presented architecture and platform independence as project goals, including separation of architecture-specific and platform code, generic drivers, and support for multiple toolchain options. It described user-defined audio-processing pipelines, configured as topologies, and communications between host software and the DSP.

The firmware overview in the slides describes C-based firmware with some assembly, build-time feature selection, and dynamically loaded pipelines. Its component diagram includes mixers, muxes, splitters, volume control, equalization, sample-rate conversion, buffers, tone processing, speaker protection, and echo-cancellation/noise-suppression blocks. These are elements shown in the 2018 design presentation; the slides alone do not establish which components or platforms are supported in current SOF releases.
Footprint claim
The presentation states that SOF “scales down to ~40kB footprint (text, data and bss).” This is an approximate figure claimed in Girdwood’s 2018 conference slides, not an independently verified benchmark or a current, universally applicable firmware-size guarantee.

What did the SOF audio demo show?
The related demo slides present examples of digital filtering and equalization, rather than independently measured listening results. The audio demo slides include:
- Band-pass: a second-order Butterworth high-pass filter paired with a second-order Butterworth low-pass filter.
- Bass boost: an example using a low-shelf filter.
- Loudness: loudness-processing examples.
- Mid boost: an FIR-filter example.
The examples show types of processing that could be configured in the presented audio pipeline. They do not establish how the settings sound on a particular device or provide controlled test results.

How should readers interpret this event material today?
Read the ELCE slides as a historical introduction to SOF’s goals and design, not as a current compatibility guide. The platform examples, roadmap, and development status in a 2018 talk are not evidence of present-day support. Anyone choosing hardware or integrating SOF needs current project documentation for the relevant DSP, drivers, firmware, and topology support; the conference archive does not verify those current details.
