For a USB drive shared between modern Windows and Mac computers, choose exFAT in most cases. Choose NTFS for a Windows-focused drive when you need Windows file-system features; choose FAT32 when a device or boot procedure specifically requires it and your files fit its 4 GiB individual-file limit. Check any device-specific requirements before formatting, and back up files first: formatting erases the drive’s existing contents.
Which file system should you choose?
| Format | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| exFAT | Moving files between Windows and Mac, storing files too large for FAT32, or using a larger external volume. | Support on older computers and specialized devices varies; check the device’s documentation. |
| NTFS | A drive used mainly with Windows when NTFS features such as file permissions or journaling matter. | Apple says a Mac may read NTFS, but its built-in Disk Utility support does not write to NTFS drives. |
| FAT32 | A device or boot workflow that specifically calls for FAT32, with files smaller than its maximum. | A single file cannot be 4 GiB or larger. |
What matters when comparing them?
Can all your devices read and write the format?
Desktop operating-system support does not guarantee that a camera, console, television, car stereo, or other specialized device accepts the same format. Confirm the target device’s requirements before erasing or reformatting a drive. Apple lists ExFAT and MS-DOS (FAT) as Windows-compatible formats in Disk Utility; its guidance recommends ExFAT for Windows-compatible volumes over 32 GB and MS-DOS (FAT) for volumes 32 GB or less. That is Apple’s formatter guidance, not a universal FAT32 capacity limit. Apple’s Disk Utility instructions
How large is your biggest individual file?
FAT32’s maximum individual file size is 4 GiB, according to Microsoft’s file-system comparison. Free space on the drive does not change that per-file ceiling: a file that reaches the limit will not fit intact. exFAT was designed to support very large files and storage devices; Microsoft’s specification says it uses 64 bits to describe file size. Do Windows-specific file-system features matter?
Microsoft identifies NTFS as the default file system for modern Windows. Its documented features include metadata-only journaling, access-control lists, file-system-level encryption, and built-in compression. These feature differences do not establish that NTFS is faster or more reliable on every USB drive; no speed or failure-rate comparison is provided here. When does each format make sense?
Choose exFAT for ordinary Windows–Mac file exchange
exFAT is generally the simplest choice among these three when you need to move files between modern Windows and Mac computers, particularly if a file might exceed FAT32’s limit. Microsoft describes exFAT as the successor to FAT32 in the FAT family and designed it for very large files and storage devices. It does not provide NTFS’s documented metadata-only journaling. For a non-computer device, verify exFAT support rather than assuming it. Microsoft’s exFAT specification · Microsoft’s file-system comparison
Choose NTFS for Windows-focused storage
NTFS is a sensible fit when Windows is the drive’s main environment and features such as permissions, encryption, compression, or journaling are useful. If you also need to save files from a Mac, account for Apple’s built-in write limitation: Apple says macOS may be able to read NTFS, but Disk Utility does not support NTFS formatting and cannot write to an NTFS drive through the documented built-in support. Choose FAT32 when compatibility or boot instructions require it
FAT32 remains appropriate when the target device or workflow explicitly asks for it, provided each file is below 4 GiB. Microsoft’s Windows installation instructions call for FAT32 on a flash drive intended to boot BIOS-based or UEFI-based PCs. When a Windows installation image exceeds the FAT32 file-size limit, Microsoft documents splitting the image into smaller parts. That deployment workaround is not a way to store an ordinary large video or archive as one intact FAT32 file. Microsoft’s Windows flash-drive installation instructions
How to format the drive without losing needed files
- Check the destination devices. Confirm which formats each computer or specialized device can read and write, and whether a boot procedure specifies one.
- Check your largest file. If it is 4 GiB or larger, do not use FAT32 unless the workflow specifically includes a suitable split-file procedure.
- Back up the drive. Formatting erases the volume’s existing contents, so copy any files you need to another location first.
- Format using the operating system’s built-in tool. On a Mac, Disk Utility’s Windows-compatible format guidance is MS-DOS (FAT) for volumes 32 GB or less and ExFAT for volumes over 32 GB. Choose based on the target device’s needs, not capacity alone.
Bottom line
Use exFAT for most Windows-and-Mac file sharing, NTFS for Windows-centered use that benefits from its features, and FAT32 only when a device or boot workflow requires it or its file limit is not a problem. Verify device compatibility and back up the drive before formatting.
