It varies by game, edition, and sometimes PC storefront: owning a game on both platforms—or being able to continue the same save—does not by itself mean the players can join one another online.
How to find Xbox–PC crossplay games
Start with Microsoft’s Xbox cross-platform multiplayer catalog, which can help you find candidates. It is a discovery tool, not a permanent guarantee that every version or mode supports the pairing you want. Microsoft’s Store policy says titles may enable cross-platform play at their discretion. Microsoft Store Policies, version 7.20, describes cross-platform gameplay as optional for titles.
- Find the game in the Xbox cross-platform multiplayer catalog.
- Open the game’s current product or support page and confirm it supports multiplayer between Xbox consoles and the specific Windows PC edition or storefront your group uses.
- Check that crossplay covers the mode you plan to play, such as co-op, campaign, or online multiplayer, and look for any account or invitation setup the game requires.
- Confirm how each player can access that edition, such as purchase or subscription, before making plans.
These checks matter because having a release on both Xbox and PC does not establish that those releases can connect to the same multiplayer session.
One confirmed example: Minecraft
Minecraft’s official cross-play information lists Windows 10, Windows 11, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and mobile as supported platforms for the applicable version. Check Minecraft’s current platform and edition details before joining: the compatibility claim applies to the relevant edition and platform context, not to every Minecraft edition being compatible with every other one.

Crossplay is not the same as Xbox Play Anywhere
Xbox Play Anywhere concerns cross-entitlement and cross-progression: it can let a player use a qualifying game across Xbox and Windows PC and carry progress between them. Microsoft explicitly says cross-play is “not required” for a game to qualify. In other words, Play Anywhere does not prove that Xbox and PC players can join each other online. Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere page explains the program and its distinction from cross-play.
Shared progress does not confirm multiplayer compatibility
A game may carry a player’s account progress between platforms without establishing that players on those platforms can play together. For example, Sea of Thieves support says progress carries between PC, Xbox, Battle.net, and PlayStation. That information is about progression; check a current Sea of Thieves multiplayer support page before relying on it as confirmation of Xbox–PC crossplay.
