Use a Galaxy routine for small battery-saving changes that fit a predictable situation—such as lowering brightness at bedtime, if your phone offers that action. For broader savings when your battery is low, use Power saving instead. Routines can automate selected actions, but Samsung does not document a universal set of battery controls that every Galaxy phone can automate.
How to create a battery-conscious routine
On supported phones, open Settings > Modes and Routines, then use the Routines tab to add a routine. Set an If condition, choose a Then action, and save. Samsung notes that the feature’s availability can vary by device and software version; see its Modes and Routines guidance.
- Open Settings > Modes and Routines and select the Routines tab. If you do not see it, search Settings for “Routines” or check whether your software uses a separate Bixby Routines app.
- Add a routine and choose a condition that matches when you want the change, such as a bedtime-related condition available on your phone.
- Choose a Then action. Check the action list on your device for brightness or screen-timeout controls; availability is not universal.
- Save the routine and confirm that its condition and action behave as intended.
A bedtime routine that lowers brightness is a reasonable example if the brightness action appears in your menu. Samsung recommends reducing brightness and screen timeout as battery-saving measures, but its guidance does not establish that either setting is available as a routine action on every model. There is no Samsung-published battery-life gain to assign to these changes.
Which battery setting fits the situation?
| Setting | What it does | When to consider it | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power saving | Limits features and background activity. | When you need a broader response to low battery. | Can restrict background apps’ access to Wi-Fi and mobile data and may disable Always On Display. Exact controls vary. |
| Maximum power saving | Adds further restrictions to apps and features. | When conserving a very low battery matters more than convenience. | More restrictive than standard Power saving. |
| Put unused apps to sleep | Limits background activity for apps used infrequently. | For apps that do not need to work in the background. | Check which apps are affected. Samsung says sleeping apps can still be opened and used. |
| Light performance mode | Prioritizes battery efficiency and cooling over processing speed for everyday use. | For supported phones when routine tasks matter more than maximum speed. | It is a separate performance setting; routine automation support is not established for all devices. |
| Brightness and screen timeout | Reducing either can help limit display power use. | For a predictable situation, if the relevant routine action is offered on your phone. | Samsung’s battery advice does not confirm universal routine support. |
Samsung describes these features and their trade-offs, but does not provide a measured battery-life improvement for changing them. Results depend on how you use the phone, so do not expect a fixed percentage or number of extra hours.

Use Power saving for a low-battery response
Power saving is a broader option than adjusting brightness at a particular time: it limits background activity and may restrict features. Depending on the phone, its controls can include background data limits, Always On Display, CPU speed, and brightness. Samsung’s battery guidance for devices sold in Canada describes these options, while noting that screens and settings may vary by country. Check the controls shown on your own device before enabling it.
Maximum power saving applies further restrictions, so it is better suited to situations where keeping the phone available matters more than normal access to features. If only a few infrequently used apps are contributing unnecessary background activity, putting those apps to sleep is a more targeted alternative.

Check your phone’s menus and software version
Menu names and feature availability vary by Galaxy model, region, and software version. Samsung’s UK guidance says routines are under Modes and Routines on Android 13 and 14, while Android 11 and 12 use the Bixby Routines app; those version notes may be superseded by later updates. If a setting or action is missing, search Settings and use the labels currently shown on your phone rather than assuming another model’s instructions apply.
