If you have an older Chromecast or Chromecast Ultra, the best documented way to reuse it without streaming is as an ambient photo and art display. Configure Ambient mode in the Google Home app to show selected Google Photos albums, artwork, the time, or weather. It still needs a connected TV that stays on; the Chromecast does not become a standalone digital photo frame.

Use Ambient mode as a photo or art display

When an eligible Chromecast is idle, Google’s Ambient screensaver can display selected Google Photos albums, art gallery images, a clock, and weather. This makes it a practical secondary use for a device that still powers on and connects to your network. Google’s setup guidance covers Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra; Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer use separate screensaver instructions.

To show personal photos, you need a Google Photos account linked through Google Home. Photos that are archived in Google Photos will not appear, even if they belong to an album you selected. Ambient mode is not a fully controlled slideshow: Google says you cannot turn Ambient mode off, and disabling custom preferences still leaves featured photos on screen. You also cannot choose when or how often a particular item appears.

Set up a legacy Chromecast in Google Home

  1. Check the model. These steps are for Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra, not Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer.
  2. Open Google Home. Select the Chromecast device tile, then open Settings and choose Ambient mode. Sign in to a Google Account if prompted.
  3. Choose what to display. Select Google Photos and choose one or more available albums, or select another available source such as Art gallery. You can also configure the time and weather options.
  4. Check the TV setup. The Chromecast must remain connected to the TV’s HDMI port, and the TV must be on for the display to be visible.

Shared albums need a name to appear in the album picker. Google’s Ambient settings also include Experimental image sources. Weather uses the home address set in Google Home or, if no home address is available, the device’s IP address. Google specifies a maximum ambient resolution of 1080p for Chromecast Ultra; that figure should not be assumed for every Chromecast model.

Fix missing or unexpected photos

  • An album is missing: Make sure it is named if it is a shared album, and check that the Google Photos account is linked in Google Home.
  • Some images do not appear: Google says personal-photo curation may omit blurry, poorly exposed, low-resolution, or near-duplicate images from private and shared albums. For eligible albums, change Personal photo curation to Live albums only to turn off curation for those albums.
  • Ambient preferences are unavailable: Google suggests restarting the Chromecast. Its help page also describes a relinking workaround: cast a YouTube video, stop and disconnect it, then try linking Ambient settings again.

The optional Family & Friends auto-updating album requires face groups. Google’s current help page says it is unavailable in Europe, Illinois, and Texas.

Check which Chromecast you have and what still works

Google’s product history distinguishes the original Chromecast, which plugged into HDMI and received wireless casts from a phone, tablet, or computer, from Chromecast Ultra, which added 4K streaming and an Ethernet port. Chromecast with Google TV introduced an on-screen interface, recommendations, a watchlist, app search, and a voice remote. These are historical distinctions, not guarantees of present-day app support.

For a legacy device, check whether it powers on, joins Wi-Fi, appears in Google Home, and offers Ambient mode settings. Passing those checks does not guarantee every casting service or feature will work. A TechRadar report published May 24, 2026 said Google had resolved an issue affecting casting on first-generation devices, while noting that first-generation updates stopped in 2023 and some apps no longer support that hardware. Compatibility can therefore vary by app and service.

The basic photo-display setup does not require a new purchase if you already have a working Chromecast, Wi-Fi, a TV, Google Home, and a Google Photos account. An HDMI extension cable is only a possible convenience if the dongle’s position makes the port hard to reach or blocks an adjacent port; it is not required for Ambient mode.
