Choose a dehumidifier by matching its current capacity rating to both the area and how damp the space is, then compare energy efficiency, humidity controls, drainage, minimum operating temperature, footprint, airflow needs and the exact model’s sound specification. “Small room” alone is not enough to determine capacity: ENERGY STAR’s broad sizing table starts with spaces under 2,000 square feet, not a bedroom-specific calculation.
1. Estimate the space and how damp it is
Measure the area the appliance needs to serve and assess the moisture problem. A bedroom with occasional humidity is a different load from a persistently wet basement or an apartment with widespread dampness. ENERGY STAR’s portable-unit guide offers broad starting ranges by area and dampness:
| ENERGY STAR space and dampness category | Suggested portable capacity |
|---|---|
| Small-to-medium space under 2,000 square feet; slightly or moderately damp | 20–30 pints per 24 hours |
| Small-to-medium space under 2,000 square feet; very damp | 25–40 pints per 24 hours |
| Small-to-medium space under 2,000 square feet; wet | 30–50 pints per 24 hours |
These are broad ranges, not precise room-by-room sizing rules. Use the actual area and dampness category rather than assuming an apartment needs the smallest unit or that every small bedroom has the same moisture load. ENERGY STAR’s sizing and buying guidance explains the categories.
2. Compare capacity ratings on the same test basis
Capacity is usually stated in pints of water removed per 24 hours. It is a test rating under specified ambient conditions, not a promise that the appliance will collect that much water each day in your home. Actual collection depends on the conditions in the space.

Check when a product’s capacity was rated. The U.S. Department of Energy changed the test procedure to use cooler, more realistic conditions: portable dehumidifiers are tested at 65°F rather than 80°F. That change typically lowers the reported capacity for comparable products, and the size of the change varies by model. An older, higher pint-per-day label is therefore not directly comparable to a current rating. See ENERGY STAR’s explanation of dehumidifier testing and capacity.
3. Compare efficiency as well as pints per day
Integrated Energy Factor (IEF) measures liters of moisture removed per kilowatt-hour of electricity. A higher IEF means more water removed per unit of energy, so compare it alongside capacity rather than choosing solely by the largest pint rating.

ENERGY STAR Version 6.0 criteria took effect on October 1, 2025. The minimum IEF for portable units depends on rated capacity:
| Portable-unit capacity band | Minimum IEF under Version 6.0 |
|---|---|
| Up to 25 pints per day | 1.70 L/kWh |
| 25.01–50 pints per day | 2.01 L/kWh |
| 50 pints per day or more | 3.30 L/kWh |
Use the applicable capacity band when checking a model’s rating; don’t compare its IEF with a threshold for a different band. The complete criteria are on ENERGY STAR’s key efficiency criteria page. ENERGY STAR’s current product page says certified dehumidifiers use 20% less energy than similarly sized conventional models; that live-page claim has no publication year stated, so treat it as ENERGY STAR’s undated comparison rather than an annual or guaranteed saving.

To check certified portable products, use the ENERGY STAR certified dehumidifier listing. ENERGY STAR also provides a rebate finder; incentives depend on location and local programs, so check availability for your address rather than assuming a rebate applies.
4. Choose controls that let you manage humidity
A built-in humidistat lets the unit cycle around a selected relative-humidity (RH) setting. A readable RH display makes it easier to see whether the room is moving toward the target. If a unit lacks a built-in humidistat or a readable humidity display, ENERGY STAR suggests using a separate hygrometer.

ENERGY STAR says building RH is generally considered best at 30%–50%. For colder climates during heating season, it recommends 30%–40% to help prevent window condensation. These are general guidelines, not a guarantee that the same setting suits every building or climate. If moisture persists, address its source as well as the room humidity: ventilation, dryer venting and drainage can all matter. A dehumidifier does not repair leaks or other underlying moisture problems.

Many portable units collect water in a removable bucket and stop when it is full. That shutoff helps prevent overflow, but means the bucket needs emptying. Some models accept a hose for continuous drainage, which can reduce manual emptying when a suitable drain is available.

- Bucket: Check its capacity and whether the unit stops when full; consider how often you are willing to empty it.
- Hose: Confirm that the model supports continuous drainage and that the drain location allows the hose to run as directed.
- Safe routing: Keep drain hoses away from electrical cords and connections.
6. Check room temperature, placement and practical fit
Below 65°F, frost can form on the coils and reduce performance. If the room is often that cool, look for a model specified to operate at lower temperatures and check its stated limits.
Before buying, make sure the unit will fit where it can operate properly. Follow the manufacturer’s clearance instructions for the discharge design so airflow is not blocked. Close doors and windows while the dehumidifier is running, as ENERGY STAR advises, and leave enough access to remove the bucket or connect and route a drain hose.
7. Evaluate apartment noise using model-specific information
There is no universal apartment noise threshold established in the official guidance covered here. Check the exact model’s published sound specification, if one is provided, and consider where it will run in relation to sleeping or work areas. Without model-specific evidence, a unit should not be described as quiet.
Quick Recap
Quick buying checklist
- Measure the area and judge whether it is slightly, moderately or very damp, or wet.
- Choose a capacity rating using current test-method figures and treat it as a test result, not a daily collection guarantee.
- Compare IEF within the correct capacity band and verify certification if that matters to you.
- Check for a humidistat and readable RH display, or plan to use a separate hygrometer.
- Decide whether a bucket or continuous hose drainage better fits the room.
- Confirm the minimum operating temperature, footprint, required airflow clearance and exact model’s sound specification.
