Track federal AI policy across four official sources: use AI.gov to discover administration announcements, the Federal Register to verify published actions, RegInfo.gov to spot planned rulemaking, and NIST to follow technical frameworks and guidance. Keep a dated change log and check each consequential item against the issuing agency’s primary record. An agenda entry is not a rule, and an executive order’s deadline does not prove that the directed work was completed.
Know what each source can—and cannot—tell you
Federal AI policy is distributed across announcement pages, formal publications, agency records, and technical guidance. No single source in this workflow provides a complete inventory. Use each for its intended purpose, then follow important items to the record that establishes their status.
| Source | Best use | What to verify elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| AI.gov | Discover dated administration actions, fact sheets, memoranda, and links to original materials. | Read the linked White House or agency document before relying on a summary. |
| Federal Register | Verify formal federal documents and their published text. | Check the issuing agency’s docket or other primary records for later proposals, amendments, delays, or implementation. |
| RegInfo.gov Unified Agenda | See agency regulatory and deregulatory actions that are planned for the near or longer term; the site provides access to the 2026 agenda. | Look for a subsequent Federal Register notice or agency docket entry. Agenda items describe plans, not binding requirements. |
| NIST | Follow technical guidance, standards-related activity, and AI Risk Management Framework updates. | Check the underlying publication’s version and status; a draft, concept note, or revision effort is not the same as final guidance. |
The Unified Agenda describes itself as providing public notice and transparency about proposed regulatory and deregulatory actions within the Executive Branch. That notice is useful for looking ahead, but it does not make a planned action effective.

Discover new federal policy items
Review AI.gov for dated administration announcements and follow its links to original White House or agency materials. Treat the index as a starting point, not the controlling record for a legal or policy claim.

Verify formal actions in the Federal Register
For each consequential document, capture its title, issuing body, document number, publication date, Federal Register citation, effective date if stated, and operative text. An announcement or fact sheet can provide context, but the published instrument is the stronger record for its exact wording.
-
Look ahead in the Unified Agenda
Use RegInfo.gov’s Unified Agenda to identify planned agency activity, including entries in the 2026 agenda. Then monitor the relevant agency docket and later Federal Register notices for a proposal, final action, delay, or withdrawal. Do not describe an agenda entry as an obligation already in force.

Verify implementation separately from an executive order
An executive order establishes what it directs, not necessarily what agencies later did or what a court will ultimately hold. For implementation claims about EO 14365, look for the actual Commerce, FCC, FTC, agency, court, or congressional record relevant to the action. In particular, do not infer that directions concerning evaluation of state AI laws, funding conditions, possible FCC proceedings, or a legislative recommendation were completed just because the order set them out.

Search with both current and historical terminology
Search historical records for “AI” and “Artificial Intelligence,” as well as current executive-branch materials using “SI” and “Super Intelligence.” Executive Order 14434, dated September 29, 2026, was published October 2, 2026, at 91 FR 63129. Section 2(a) directs executive departments and agencies, to the maximum extent permitted by law, to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in listed non-statutory executive-branch communications. The order says previously issued regulations and historical documents need not be altered, so a terminology change in current communications does not mean older records have been renamed.
Keep a change log that distinguishes status from schedule
Use one entry per document or development. Record enough detail to identify the source, understand its legal or practical status, and know what to check next.

Keep federal and state tracking separate
This workflow covers federal sources; it does not establish a comprehensive state-law tracker or the legal effect of individual state and federal measures in a particular situation. If your work depends on state requirements, track enactment, effective dates, litigation, and enforcement through authoritative state and court records as a separate task. Do not treat a federal executive order directing review of state laws as proof that a state measure has been displaced or invalidated.
