Compare a representative basket at nearby stores, then weigh selection, travel and online-shopping convenience. Prices and ranges vary by location, so no chain can be named the cheapest everywhere.
Compare the cost of your regular basket
Start with a short list of repeat purchases and the quantities your household uses. Check the same items at each realistic local option, then compare the total. A single low shelf price or a prominent special does not show which store offers the best value across your shop.
- List your usual items and amounts. Use products and quantities that reflect what you actually buy, rather than building a basket around advertised deals.
- Check current prices at nearby stores. Include online prices only if that is how you would shop, and note any delivery or fulfilment charges.
- Compare like with like. For similar products, use the unit price when available; account for differences in brand, quality, package size and format.
- Recheck the total using prices that apply to you. Include qualifying loyalty prices only if you can access them, and compare them with alternatives.
Unit prices express cost per standard measure—such as kilogram, litre or item—so shoppers can compare similar products in different pack sizes. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says unit prices help consumers compare similar products: ACCC guidance on grocery unit prices.
Use unit prices where the comparison is fair
Unit pricing can help when package sizes differ, when checking a promotion, or when comparing brands and formats. It can also make a quantity change less easy to miss. But the lowest cost per kilogram or litre is not automatically the best choice: a larger pack may expire or go to waste, especially for fresh food. In its UK consumer research, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that some participants considered bulk comparisons less suitable for fresh foods because of waste concerns. Check the measure and label
Unit-price rules and displays differ by jurisdiction, and labels may not always make comparisons straightforward. Canadian federal consumer guidance describes voluntary, non-standardized displays outside Quebec at the time of publication; the CMA has reported issues including different measures for the same product, promotion-related problems and hard-to-read labels. If the measures do not match, check each package quantity and calculate a common unit rather than treating unlike measures as equivalent. Requirements depend on where you shop. Australia requires most supermarkets and online grocery stores to display unit pricing under its applicable code. Singapore’s Competition and Consumer Commission describes a unit-pricing pilot with CASE at selected participating supermarkets; that does not establish that all Singapore supermarkets display unit prices. Check local rules and the labels available where you live: Singapore’s unit-pricing information.

Assess loyalty prices and promotions
A loyalty price is available to members of a retailer’s scheme and may appear beside a higher non-member price. Compare the price you personally qualify for, and check any relevant membership requirements or costs before counting the discount in your basket.
In a 2024 UK review, the CMA analysed around 50,000 grocery products with loyalty-price promotions and found very little evidence that retailers inflated usual prices to make deals appear better. It also cautioned that a loyalty price is not always the cheapest option. The finding applies to the UK review, not to every retailer or market. Read the CMA announcement on grocery loyalty prices.

The CMA’s 2024 UK survey found that 69% of respondents said loyalty pricing had not changed how much they compared supermarket prices, while 24% said they compared more. Respondents regularly shopped at an average of three supermarkets. These survey results describe UK respondents; they do not mean that every shopper should make several separate trips. Check whether the store carries what you need
A broad range matters only if it covers your household’s regular groceries: preferred brands, dietary options and everyday staples. Availability can vary between branches, and an online range may differ from the physical store. Check the specific branch or delivery service for items that matter to you rather than assuming a chain stocks them everywhere.

Weigh the real convenience of shopping there
Consider the whole trip or online fulfilment, not just the time spent in the aisles. For an in-person shop, compare travel time, opening hours, accessibility, parking or public transport. For online shopping, check whether delivery slots suit your schedule and whether minimum orders or fees affect the total.
These details are local and can change, so confirm them directly with the store or delivery service. Whether a lower basket total is worth extra travel or a less convenient delivery window depends on your household and routine.

Make the comparison fit your circumstances

If one store is not best on every measure, decide which factors matter most to your household. A second store may be useful if it improves value or access for particular items, but only if the added trip or effort makes sense for you.
