For U.S. election results, use the relevant state or local election office to check official vote totals and certification status. Election-night totals are preliminary and unofficial; a media projection or race call is a newsroom judgment, not government certification. Final results come after the jurisdiction completes its required post-election processes, which vary by state and sometimes locality.
Where do I find election results?
Start with the election authority responsible for the contest: your state election office for statewide and federal races, or the relevant local office for local contests. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) directs voters to state and territory election websites for results information in its voter resources.
On the official results page, check the contest name, the page’s last-updated time, and the status label. A page may display unofficial returns while counting is underway; look for the jurisdiction’s certification record to determine whether results have been certified. The EAC states that “Only election officials provide official election results” and that results are unofficial until certified. See its election results, canvass, and certification guidance.
What do “projected,” “called,” “unofficial,” and “certified” mean?
| Label | Who provides it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Unofficial results | Election offices publish preliminary returns; news organizations may also display them. | Votes reported so far. Ballots may remain to be processed or counted, and the totals are not yet certified. |
| Projected or called | A news organization. | The newsroom’s assessment of who is expected to win. It is not a government result or certification. |
| Certified results | The election officials designated by state or local law. | The jurisdiction has completed its required procedures and attested to the final accounting for that contest. |
These labels answer different questions. A newsroom call addresses whether the outstanding vote could change the apparent winner; certification is an official step confirming the election’s accounting. The Associated Press, for example, says it calls a race when it is fully confident trailing candidates no longer have a path to victory. That is AP’s own methodology, not a standard that binds other newsrooms or replaces the election authority’s result. Read AP’s race-call methodology when interpreting an AP call.

Why do election results change after election night?
Election-night reporting systems collect, aggregate, and share unofficial returns quickly. Those returns can be incomplete even when a results page says “100% precincts reporting”: that label describes precinct reporting status, not whether every eligible ballot has been counted or post-election checks are finished.
Totals can change as officials process and count eligible ballots under state rules, including mail, provisional, military, and overseas ballots. The canvass also reconciles voter and ballot records and resolves discrepancies. A later update can therefore reflect ordinary counting or reconciliation rather than evidence of wrongdoing. Rules for ballot receipt, processing, and counting differ among states and localities.

How do counting, canvassing, audits, recounts, and certification fit together?
These are related but distinct parts of the process. The sequence and deadlines vary by jurisdiction; consult the relevant election office for its calendar and rules.
- Unofficial reporting: After polls close, officials release preliminary totals as quickly as possible. Reporting systems aggregate these returns, which remain unofficial.
- Continued ballot processing and counting: Officials handle eligible ballots under state and local rules. Some ballots may be counted after Election Day.
- Canvass: Officials check and reconcile election records and vote totals, including resolving discrepancies between voter and ballot counts.
- Audit: Where required, officials conduct an audit under the jurisdiction’s process to verify counts. An audit is not the same as a recount.
- Recount, if required or triggered: An additional count may occur under state rules and can change official results. Eligibility, triggers, procedures, and timing vary.
- Certification: The authorized officials attest to the final accounting after required procedures are complete.
When are election results final?
There is no single nationwide certification date for every race. State and local timelines differ, and recounts may affect deadlines. To find out whether a particular contest is final, check the election authority’s official certification record and calendar; a media call or an election-night total cannot answer that question.
