Cursor can import VS Code extensions, themes, settings, and keybindings in one operation. Zed imports a documented subset of settings, but not extensions or keybindings; use its VS Code base keymap for familiar defaults, then add the extensions and custom shortcuts you need separately.
What transfers to Cursor and Zed?
| Editor | Settings and themes | Extensions | Keybindings | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cursor | Cursor’s importer says it transfers settings and themes. [Cursor import guide] | Cursor’s importer says it transfers extensions; availability depends on its Open VSX registry. [Cursor extensions documentation] | Cursor’s importer says it transfers keybindings. [Cursor import guide] | Use the one-click import for a quick move, or export and import a VS Code profile for more control. |
| Zed | Imports a listed set of settings, not every setting in a VS Code settings file. [Zed migration guide] | Not imported. Install available Zed equivalents separately. [Zed migration guide] | Personal VS Code keybindings are not imported. The VS Code base keymap retains familiar default shortcuts. [Zed migration guide] [Zed keybindings guide] | Plan to review extension replacements and recreate custom shortcuts you rely on. |
Neither editor’s documentation promises that every VS Code setting, extension, or workflow will behave identically after a move. Keep your VS Code profile available while you check the destination.
Prepare your VS Code setup
- Identify the profile you actually use. If you have more than one VS Code profile, confirm which contains your current settings and extensions. VS Code’s Profiles UI can export a profile to a local file or GitHub Gist for use with Cursor. [Cursor import guide]
- Save your custom shortcuts. Open VS Code’s Keyboard Shortcuts editor to review bindings. Its JSON view includes the key, command, and any optional
whencondition. Keep a copy so you can compare or rebuild bindings later. [VS Code keyboard shortcuts documentation] - Make an extension inventory. Record each extension’s exact publisher and identifier, along with the language tools, formatter, debugger, or remote-development features you use. This will help you identify the intended extension and test whether a replacement covers the same workflow.
- Leave the original setup intact for now. Do not treat the migration as complete until you have opened a representative project and checked the workflows you depend on.
Migrate VS Code to Cursor
Use Cursor’s one-click import
- Open Cursor Settings with
Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+J. - Go to General > Account.
- Under VS Code Import, select Import.
- After import, review the extensions, theme, settings, and shortcuts in Cursor and check your project.
Cursor’s guide describes this importer as transferring extensions, themes, settings, and keybindings. An extension may still be unavailable or behave differently in Cursor, so confirm each important item rather than assuming installation and compatibility.
Import a VS Code profile for more control
- In VS Code, open the Command Palette with
Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+P. - Run Preferences: Open Profiles (UI), select the profile to move, and use its three-dot menu to export it to a local file or GitHub Gist.
- In Cursor, open Preferences: Open Profiles (UI), choose Import Profile, then select the file or paste the Gist URL.
- Import and activate the profile, then check the result in a project you use regularly.
This route is useful when you want to choose a particular profile or move it between machines. [Cursor import guide]

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check extension publishers and availability
Cursor uses Open VSX for third-party extensions, and its documentation notes that not every Microsoft Marketplace extension is listed. An identical publisher.extension name can also refer to different publishers or code across the two registries. For each extension you depend on, check the publisher, install the intended listing, and verify it in a representative project. [Cursor extensions documentation]
Migrate VS Code settings, extensions, and shortcuts to Zed
Import the settings Zed supports
Zed offers to import settings during setup. If you skipped that step, open the Command Palette and run zed: import vs code settings. Zed documents mappings for selected settings, including project panel behavior, Git display, window behavior, proxy, package-manager path, telemetry, outline icons, and some agent and context-server settings. It does not claim to translate every entry in a VS Code settings.json; review the relevant Zed settings after importing. [Zed migration guide]

Install extension equivalents separately
Zed’s migration guide says it does not import extensions. Make a list of your must-have VS Code extensions, then look for equivalents in Zed’s extension ecosystem. Confirm that an available extension supports the language or workflow you need; a VS Code extension package should not be assumed to work in Zed. [Zed migration guide]
Choose the VS Code base keymap and rebuild custom shortcuts
Select the VS Code keymap during Zed setup if it is offered. You can also change base_keymap later in Settings or Zed’s settings file. Zed lists VS Code as a supported base keymap, which gives you familiar default shortcuts; it does not import your personal keybindings.json. [Zed keybindings guide]
