Most Wi-Fi extenders can connect to routers from other brands, but compatibility is not guaranteed by a “universal” label. Check the extender’s supported Wi-Fi bands and standards, its setup options, and any router-firmware caveats. Then place it where it still receives a usable signal from the router. If Ethernet reaches the spot you want to cover, an extender with access point mode may be a better fit.
Will a Wi-Fi extender work with your router?
Often, yes—even if the router and extender are different brands. Basic Wi-Fi compatibility does not mean every router, firmware version, or advanced feature will work. Check the extender manufacturer’s compatibility notes for your exact model and hardware version, especially if your router uses altered, open-source, nonstandard, or outdated firmware.
For example, TP-Link says its RE500X “may not be compatible with routers or gateways with firmware that has been altered, is based on open source programs, or is non-standard or outdated.” That is a manufacturer caveat, not an independent compatibility test: TP-Link RE500X specifications.
What should you compare before choosing?
Wi-Fi bands and standards
Check which bands your router provides and which the extender supports. Many routers and extenders offer 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, but support varies by model. Compare the listed Wi-Fi standards as well; do not assume an extender supports every generation just because it connects to Wi-Fi.

Compatibility notes and firmware
Read the support page for the exact extender version you plan to buy. A broad claim such as “works with any Wi-Fi router” should not outweigh specific exclusions or firmware requirements. Model revisions and regional variants can differ, so verify the hardware version and current documentation for your market.

Setup options
WPS can make pairing easier when both devices support it, but it is not essential if the extender also offers app or browser setup. TP-Link’s RE230 instructions direct users without router WPS to app or web setup, and the company notes that WPS may fail when router support is incomplete: TP-Link RE230 setup FAQ.
Ethernet, access point mode, and ports
A typical range extender repeats the router’s signal wirelessly. An extender with access point (AP) mode can instead use an Ethernet connection to provide Wi-Fi at its location. Choose AP mode when a cable can reach the coverage area and the model supports it. Check Ethernet port speed if wired devices or the wired link’s capacity matter; for instance, TP-Link lists a gigabit Ethernet port on the RE505X: RE505X specifications.

Mesh features
Do not assume that ordinary Wi-Fi compatibility gives you a single network name or coordinated roaming. Those features depend on the router and extender supporting the same mesh system, and may require particular models or firmware. If managed roaming or one network name matters, check the manufacturer’s exact compatibility list before buying.
How to set up and place an extender
- Choose a supported setup method. Use WPS only if both devices support it and follow the extender’s model-specific instructions. If pairing fails, try the manufacturer’s app or browser setup if available; a WPS failure alone does not show that the Wi-Fi radios are incompatible.
- Start within usable router coverage. Pair the extender where it can still receive a good signal from the router, then move it toward the area with weak coverage. Putting it in the dead zone may leave it with too little signal to extend.
- Use the signal indicator or app guide. Follow the instructions for your exact model. In TP-Link’s RE235BE guide, the indicator identifies whether the location is suitable; a weak-signal warning means moving closer to the router. LED colors and meanings vary by model: TP-Link RE235BE placement guide.
- Use AP mode if you have Ethernet. Switch the extender to AP mode and connect it to a modem or wired router with an Ethernet cable, following the device instructions. TP-Link’s RE230 V2/RE330 V1 guide describes this wired setup: TP-Link AP mode guide for RE230 V2 and RE330 V1.
How much speed or coverage should you expect?
Product-page Mbps figures describe advertised physical link rates, not guaranteed internet speed or a promised improvement in coverage. TP-Link lists the RE505X at 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 1,200 Mbps on 5 GHz; it lists the RE230 at up to 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 433 Mbps on 5 GHz. Those figures are manufacturer specifications accessed in 2026, not independent tests or expected real-world throughput.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
Actual results depend on conditions such as signal quality, client-device limits, building materials, obstacles, network traffic, and where devices are located. The cited product pages do not establish a dependable real-world speed gain or coverage radius, and do not provide independent cross-brand performance comparisons. Treat headline AC or AX rates as specification context, not a prediction for your home.

Quick buying checklist
- Confirm the extender supports your router’s available bands and the Wi-Fi standards your devices use.
- Check compatibility notes for your router model, firmware, and the extender’s hardware version.
- Make sure you have a usable setup route: WPS, app, or browser configuration.
- Decide whether you need wireless repeating or wired AP mode, and check the Ethernet port if relevant.
- Look for placement guidance such as a signal indicator or location tool.
- If you want one network name or coordinated roaming, verify support for your exact mesh ecosystem rather than relying on basic Wi-Fi compatibility.
