To check whether an iPhone, iPad, or Mac can install the latest major operating-system release, identify its exact model, check what Software Update offers, and compare the model with Apple’s compatibility list for that release. “Up to date” means no newer compatible update is currently offered to that device; it does not necessarily mean the device supports the newest major release.
As of October 4, 2026, Apple lists iOS 27.0.1, iPadOS 27.0.1, and macOS 27.0.1 as current releases. These versions and supported-model lists can change, so check Apple’s security releases page for the latest status.
Check your device’s exact model and available updates
Software Update is the quickest device-specific check. Apple says it shows only software compatible with your Mac model; on iPhone and iPad, it shows the updates available for that device. To confirm eligibility for a particular major release, however, compare the exact model with Apple’s list for that release.
iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Review the installed iOS version and whether an update is offered.
- For eligibility for iOS 27 specifically, check whether your model appears on Apple’s compatibility list. The iOS 27 list starts with iPhone 11.

iPad
- To identify the iPad model and installed iPadOS version, open Settings > General > About.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update to see which compatible update is offered.
- For iPadOS 27 eligibility, compare the exact model with Apple’s iPadOS 27 compatibility guide.
Mac
- Open the Apple menu, then choose System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Review the version installed and any update offered. On older macOS versions, search for Software Update or follow Apple’s instructions for that system.
- To check eligibility for macOS 27, find the Mac’s exact model and compare it with Apple’s macOS 27 Golden Gate compatibility list.
If Software Update offers nothing, the Mac may not need an update or may not be compatible with one. That result alone does not confirm whether it supports the newest major macOS release; use the model list for that.

Compare your model with the latest major-release list
Apple’s iOS and iPadOS 27 release listing gives these compatibility boundaries. For an exact iPad model—especially a newer one—use Apple’s model guide linked above.

Because Mac compatibility depends on the exact model, check Apple’s page rather than inferring support from the computer’s age or appearance.
Understand what “up to date” tells you
A device may be current on the updates available for its existing operating-system branch without supporting the newest major release. Apple’s releases page, for example, lists iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1 alongside version 27.0.1. Check Software Update for compatible updates and the major-release list for new-version eligibility; those checks answer different questions.

Operating-system compatibility also does not guarantee that every feature is available. Apple notes that iPad features and apps can vary by model, region, language, and carrier, and that update features may not be available on every device or in every country or region. If you are checking for one particular feature, verify that feature’s requirements separately.
