USS Harry S. Truman is a Nimitz-class carrier. Compared with the newer Ford class, it has a similar overall role and headline size, but uses older steam catapults and arresting gear and a different flight-deck and weapons-handling layout. Ford’s systems are designed to move and launch aircraft more efficiently, reduce maintenance and personnel demands, and support a higher sortie rate. The Navy has reported preliminary evidence of a sortie-generation increase, but its analysis is ongoing; the often-cited 160-versus-120 figure is a program comparison, not a guaranteed operational result.
How similar are the ships in size and basic capability?
The comparison is between Truman, one ship in the Nimitz class, and the Ford-class design. The Navy’s 2025 carrier briefing lists both classes at more than 30 knots and more than 65 aircraft. Those are class-level summary figures: the aircraft actually embarked on a carrier vary with its mission and deployment.

These approximate class-level figures come from the Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic’s 2025 carrier visitor briefing. The displacement difference is modest; Ford is not a different size category of ship. A separate NAVSEA program-office slide gives different comparison figures for air-wing size—70 aircraft for Nimitz and 75 for Ford—illustrating that aircraft counts depend on the comparison and should not be treated as a fixed deployment loadout.
What changed in aircraft launch and recovery?
Launch: steam catapults versus EMALS
Truman’s Nimitz-class design uses four steam catapults. Ford has four Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch Systems (EMALS). Both systems launch aircraft from the flight deck; EMALS replaces the steam-powered mechanism with stored kinetic energy and solid-state electrical power conversion.

NAVAIR says EMALS is designed to give operators precise control of launch end speed and to launch a broad range of aircraft, from lightweight unmanned systems to heavy strike fighters. The agency also describes reduced aircraft stress and maintenance demands as intended benefits. These are design characteristics, not a quantified Truman-versus-Ford reliability result. Recovery: Mk-7 versus AAG
Nimitz-class carriers use Mk-7 arresting gear; Ford uses Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG). AAG uses energy absorbers, power conditioning, and digital controls. NAVAIR describes it as designed to recover a broad range of aircraft with lower maintenance and manpower needs than Mk-7. Those benefits should be understood as system aims rather than a public, deployment-by-deployment measurement. NAVAIR’s AAG system description provides the technical overview.

Why does Ford’s flight deck matter?
Ford’s changes are not limited to catapult technology. Its redesigned flight deck and weapons-handling arrangements are intended to keep aircraft and ordnance moving through the ship more efficiently. NAVSEA’s CVN 78 Class Program Office comparison, dated April 4, 2022, lists 4.5 acres of flight deck for Nimitz and 5 acres for Ford. It also compares horizontal weapons movement distances of about 1,500 feet and about 390 feet, respectively. The shorter route illustrates the altered ordnance flow; acreage by itself does not measure how effectively a carrier can conduct flight operations.
The same NAVSEA slide lists accommodations of 5,922 for Nimitz and 4,660 for Ford. “Accommodations” is not a simple count of ship’s company, air wing, and staff, so those numbers should not be read as the total personnel embarked on a particular deployment. Does Ford generate more sorties?
Sortie generation—the rate at which a carrier launches aircraft missions—is a central Ford design objective. The 2022 NAVSEA program-office comparison lists sustained sortie-generation rates of 120 for Nimitz and 160 for Ford. These are program comparison figures that describe design potential, not proof that a Ford carrier achieves that rate on every deployment or under every operating condition.
There is some operational evidence, but it is not a controlled comparison. In a 2026 statement, U.S. Fleet Forces Command said preliminary reports from Ford’s Sortie Generation Rate test program showed that the flight-deck design, EMALS, and AAG had contributed to an increase compared with a Nimitz-class carrier. The command also said the Navy was still analyzing the data. That supports a qualified statement that early test reporting is promising; it does not establish a universal 33 percent increase in operational sortie rates.

Ford’s first deployment gives a sense of activity, not a direct class-versus-class scorecard. The Navy reported that the 2023 deployment lasted 239 days underway and involved 10,396 sorties and 17,826 flight hours. Without comparable dates, mission mix, operating conditions, and calculation methods for Truman, those totals cannot show which class produced more sorties in equivalent circumstances. Navy materials describe Ford as designed to require fewer personnel and to lower lifecycle operating and support costs than Nimitz. Those are design expectations and long-term estimates, not a statement about the number of people aboard during any specific mission. Personnel comparisons also depend on what is counted: ship’s company alone, or the air wing and other embarked staff as well.

Cost figures need similar care. The Navy’s 2025 carrier briefing uses fiscal-year labels for acquisition-cost figures; those figures should not be treated as like-for-like prices without accounting for their different bases. Acquisition cost is also distinct from lifecycle operating and support cost. The relevant design and ship-sequence context appears in AIRLANT’s Naval Aviation 2025.
Which carrier is more capable?
Ford is the newer design, built around electrical launch and recovery systems, revised aircraft and weapons flow, and expected reductions in maintenance and personnel burden. Truman remains a nuclear-powered supercarrier with broadly similar headline speed and aircraft capacity. The practical difference is less about a dramatic jump in ship size than about how the newer design aims to generate and sustain flight-deck activity.
For sortie generation in particular, separate the design target from demonstrated performance: the published 120-to-160 comparison is not an assured deployment rate, while the Navy’s early test reports point to an increase but remain preliminary. Neither aircraft capacity nor flight-deck acreage alone establishes combat power; actual capability also depends on the embarked air wing, mission, and operating conditions.
