Compare it with a conventional phone at the same storage tier, in your region, and on the same purchase date; there is no universal price premium that makes a foldable worthwhile for everyone.
Calculate the total cost over the same ownership period
Use the same number of years for both phones. Compare what each will cost you to buy, protect, use and eventually sell—not just its advertised price.
Expected ownership cost = net purchase cost + cases and accessories + protection-plan premiums + expected out-of-warranty repair expense + financing cost − expected resale value.
Net purchase cost is the local price after only discounts or trade-in offers you can actually obtain. Include taxes and financing charges where applicable. For resale, use a realistic estimate for your model and market at the end of your planned ownership period; if you cannot make a credible estimate, leave it out of both sides rather than guessing.

Take the foldable total minus the conventional-phone total. That difference is the extra amount you need to justify with the foldable’s benefits. Do the arithmetic separately for each repair scenario rather than hiding uncertain repair exposure in a single assumed figure.
Compare repair and protection scenarios without inventing failure odds
Do not assign a failure probability unless a credible source provides a comparable, model-specific rate. Instead, calculate totals under clear scenarios:
- No repair: Count purchase, accessories, coverage, financing and resale, with no repair expense.
- One quoted repair: Add a local quote for the relevant screen or hinge repair. Use quotes for the exact model and service route where possible.
- Protection-plan claim: Add the plan premiums and applicable deductible or service fee, and check whether the damage and repair are covered.
For plans, compare the local premium, deductible, accidental-damage coverage, exclusions, claim limits and repair process. Motorola’s U.S. support information for MotoCare says physical and liquid damage are outside the standard warranty; that U.S.-specific information should not be assumed to describe other markets. Samsung says Care+ benefits and fees vary by country or region, so check the terms for your location at Samsung Care+.

Decide what the foldable’s form factor is worth to you
The cost calculation gives you a break-even question: would you pay the extra amount for the functions you will actually use, over your ownership period? Treat that as personal utility, not guaranteed cash savings.

If you are considering a book-style Fold
Ask how often you would use the larger unfolded display for reading, documents, media or running apps side by side. Samsung describes these as potential benefits, including tablet-like multitasking, but that is manufacturer positioning rather than independent evidence of productivity gains. A larger display saves money only if you would otherwise buy or carry another device and the foldable genuinely replaces it.
Samsung Southeast Asia & Oceania mobile-experience executive Carl Nordenberg described the Galaxy Z Fold8’s 4:3 main display as suited to entertainment, reading and media, and the Fold8 Ultra’s 8-inch main display as aimed at multitasking and productivity in a Q&A published by Samsung Newsroom Singapore on 2 September 2026. If you are considering a Flip-style phone
Consider whether a compact folded body, a smaller closed form and hands-free camera angles matter in your routine. These benefits differ from the larger workspace emphasized by a book-style foldable. If you mainly want a conventional phone experience and rarely use the folded form, the extra cost may buy little practical value for you.
Account for everyday handling
Include daily friction in your decision: closed dimensions, weight, battery and camera needs, and whether you are comfortable handling a flexible inner screen and hinge. Samsung acknowledges that foldables cost more and require careful handling in its Canada buying guide. A model-specific case is an optional expense; Samsung says compatible cases are designed for particular models and commonly use two parts with adhesive strips. Check exact-model compatibility at Samsung Canada’s case guide. A case should not be treated as a guarantee against inner-screen or hinge failure.
Interpret durability claims carefully
Samsung UK says its flagship foldables are rated for 2–5 years and more than 300,000 folds in its current buying guide. This is a manufacturer claim about rated folds; it is not a real-world failure probability or a comparison of failure rates and repair costs against conventional phones. It cannot tell you what an individual device will cost to repair.

Water-resistance ratings also have specific boundaries. Samsung Canada states that IP48 testing covers freshwater up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes, says resistance can diminish with wear, and does not advise beach or pool use in its foldable-phone buying guide. That rating is not proof of drop, dust or hinge resistance.
Make the decision with your own numbers
- Choose one foldable and one conventional alternative with the same storage capacity, market and purchase date.
- Set the ownership period you genuinely expect to keep either phone.
- Gather current net prices, eligible trade-in or discount terms, accessory costs, local plan terms, financing charges and realistic resale estimates.
- Get a repair quote if you want to test a repair scenario; do not substitute an unsupported failure percentage.
- Calculate each phone’s ownership cost for the scenarios that matter to you.
- Compare the foldable’s added cost with how much you value its specific form factor and the frequency with which you will use it.
Because prices, plan terms, repair quotes and resale values depend on model, timing and region, the calculation has to use your local figures. The result is not a universal verdict on foldables: it is a way to see whether a particular foldable’s extra cost is justified for your needs.
