A cordless vacuum that will not charge, runs briefly, or cuts out does not automatically need a new battery. First check the outlet and charging connections, then rule out a high-power setting, blockage, dirty filter, or overheating. If it still runs for much less time after a full charge and basic maintenance, the battery may be worn or the vacuum may need service.
Identify what “not holding a charge” means
Different symptoms point to different checks. A vacuum that never appears to charge calls for checking the power supply and connections. One that charges but runs briefly may be affected by its power mode, cleaning conditions, maintenance, or battery condition. A vacuum that stops under load may also be responding to a blockage or overheating. An indicator that seems not to change is not, by itself, proof of battery failure.
Manufacturer guidance reflects these possibilities: Dyson lists power mode, filter, cyclone, and battery among potential causes of rapid battery loss, while LG’s power troubleshooting includes low battery and maintenance-related checks. Check the charging path before buying a battery
- Test the outlet. Confirm it supplies power, then connect the vacuum’s adapter as directed by its manual.
- Check the adapter, dock, and seating. Make sure the charger plug is fully inserted and the vacuum or removable battery is seated correctly in its dock or stand.
- Inspect contacts and ports. With the vacuum off, look for lint or dust at accessible charging contacts or ports. Clean them only as the manufacturer instructs; do not force tools or liquids into a connector.
- Stop using damaged charging equipment. If a cable, plug, or charger is damaged, contact the manufacturer or use a replacement confirmed compatible with the exact model.

Rule out operating mode, blockages, and filter issues
Compare runtime in the same mode and task
High-power modes can use a charge faster than lower settings, and the task affects runtime. Compare your vacuum’s performance with the manufacturer’s published figure for the exact model and mode; do not compare a high-power run with a stated maximum runtime from another setting.

These are LG’s model-specific published figures, not independent comparative test results or general expectations for cordless vacuums. Inspect accessible airflow components
Turn the vacuum off and, where the manual permits, check the dust bin, nozzle, wand or tube, brush roll, hose if fitted, and filter. Remove accessible debris according to the model’s care instructions. A restriction or dirty filter can reduce performance, contribute to overheating, or cause a vacuum to cut out—symptoms that can resemble an electrical or battery fault.

- Replace battery
Do not wash a filter unless the manual says it is washable, and let a washed filter dry completely before reinstalling it. Dyson’s V15 guidance specifies at least 24 hours of drying for that model’s filter; that is not a universal drying time. If the vacuum still runs for unusually little time after a full, model-appropriate charge and the charging path and maintenance checks are sound, a worn battery becomes more plausible. LG says that batteries are consumables with a limited lifespan and that short usage time despite a full charge may indicate the battery has reached its end of life. That does not establish a universal replacement age or runtime threshold: the manufacturer guidance cited here does not set one that applies across brands and models. LG CordZero troubleshooting

Before ordering a part, find the vacuum’s full model identifier and check the battery or charger part number specified by its manufacturer. Similar-looking parts are not evidence of compatibility. Miele’s guidance, for example, directs owners to replace a faulty battery with an original Miele lithium-ion rechargeable battery; that instruction applies to Miele equipment, not every brand.
