If your pressure washer won’t start, first identify whether it runs on gasoline or electricity. On a gas model, check fuel, the starting controls, spark-plug lead, and oil if the engine has a low-oil sensor. If the pull cord is unusually hard to move, release pressure by aiming the spray gun safely and squeezing its trigger. On an electric model, check the GFCI and power supply instead. Use the instructions for your exact washer and engine for settings and further diagnosis.

Start with the symptom and power source

Gasoline and electric pressure washers have different no-start checks. A gas engine may fail to fire, or its recoil cord may be difficult to pull. An electric washer may have no motor response. Match the symptom to the path below rather than applying engine checks to an electric unit.

Washer or symptom First checks
Gasoline engine will not start Fuel, choke, spark-plug lead, engine switch, fuel valve, and oil level if a low-oil sensor is fitted. Follow the unit’s starting instructions. Simpson use-and-care manual
Recoil cord is unusually hard to pull With the gun pointed in a safe direction, squeeze its trigger to release possible pump pressure. If the cord remains stuck, stop and consult the manual or service support. Simpson pressure-washer FAQ
Electric motor will not start Check and reset the GFCI if tripped, release built-up pressure with the gun pointed safely, and check the circuit breaker or fuse. Simpson pressure-washer FAQ

Gasoline pressure washer: checks when the engine will not start

Simpson’s troubleshooting table lists the following possible causes and basic checks. They are not universal settings: controls and starting procedures vary by model and engine.

  • Fuel: Check that there is fuel in the tank. If it is empty, add fuel as specified in the equipment or engine manual.
  • Choke: Check the choke position against the starting procedure for your washer. Do not assume one position applies to every engine.
  • Spark-plug lead: Check that the lead is connected. If the engine manual calls for removing or inspecting the plug, use a tool and replacement part that match the exact engine.
  • Engine switch and fuel valve: Check that each is in the starting position indicated on the unit or in its manual; Simpson lists OFF settings as possible causes.
  • Oil level: Check and fill oil according to the engine manual if your engine has a low-oil sensor. This check does not apply to every model.

For example, Briggs & Stratton provides a choke procedure specifically for pressure washers equipped with its CR950 engine. Use it only if your washer has that engine, not as a general procedure for other models: CR950 pressure-washer starting guidance.

If the pressure washer pull cord won’t pull

A recoil cord that feels locked can be caused by pressure held in the pump or high-pressure hose. This may happen after use if the gun trigger was not squeezed before shutdown. Aim the spray gun in a safe direction and squeeze the trigger to release pressure, then try the cord again. Simpson also advises checking the oil level if trouble persists.

If the cord is still stuck after you release pressure, do not force it or assume pressure lock is the cause. Stop and consult the equipment or engine manual, or contact service support.

Electric pressure washer: motor will not start

  1. Check the GFCI. If it has tripped, reset it according to the washer’s instructions.
  2. Release possible pump pressure. Point the spray gun safely and squeeze its trigger.
  3. Check the supply. Check whether the circuit breaker has tripped or a fuse has blown.
  4. Escalate if it remains silent. Contact the manufacturer’s support channel if these checks do not resolve the problem.

Gas-engine checks such as choke position, fuel valve, and spark-plug lead do not apply to an electric washer.

When basic checks do not solve it

Use the operator’s manual for the exact pressure-washer model and the owner’s manual for its engine before making adjustments or attempting service. Briggs & Stratton cautions users to consult equipment and engine manuals to help avoid injury or property damage. Its general small-engine guidance identifies stale fuel, dirt, and debris as common causes of starting or running problems, but those possibilities do not establish the cause of any particular washer’s failure.

Tools and parts: match them to the engine

A spark-plug socket or wrench is relevant only if the engine manual calls for plug removal or inspection. Simpson describes a plug-removal tool in its FAQ, but the sources do not establish one socket size or replacement plug for all pressure washers. Check the exact engine specifications before choosing either. For further engine diagnosis, Simpson directs owners to the engine manual; use the official manual for your particular engine and washer model.
