To connect a retro console to an HDMI-only TV, match the converter or processor to the console’s actual video signal—composite, S-Video, component, SCART/RGB or RF—then run its HDMI output to the TV. If the TV already has a compatible analog input, a suitable console cable may connect directly. Check both devices’ ports before buying: “AV” can mean different signals, and a cable that fits the console is not automatically compatible.

Identify the console’s video output and the TV’s inputs

Start with the console’s model label and the shape and markings of its video-output port. Then check the TV’s input panel or manual. Match the signal type, not just the plug’s appearance or the general label “AV.” Common analog video types include composite, S-Video, component, SCART/RGB and RF; some consoles use a proprietary connector at the console end of an otherwise familiar AV cable.

  • Composite: often carried on a yellow RCA video plug, with red and white RCA plugs for audio.
  • S-Video: a separate video connection; it is not interchangeable with composite.
  • Component: uses separate video connections, commonly red, green and blue, and may require separate audio leads.
  • SCART/RGB or RF: these need an adapter or processor that explicitly accepts that signal. A composite converter is not a universal AV adapter.

Do not assume that two consoles with red, white and yellow plugs use the same console-side cable. For example, Nintendo says Wii owners should use the cable supplied with the Wii or the Wii Component AV Cable, not an arbitrary AV cable. Its instructions show the Wii AV Multi Out plug connecting to the console and the RCA plugs to the TV or other equipment. Nintendo’s Wii connection instructions also recommend checking the TV’s inputs before choosing component.

Choose a connection path that matches your equipment

Connection path When it fits Check before connecting
Direct analog connection The TV has an input matching the console’s signal and you have the correct cable. Confirm the TV input type and console-specific cable. For Wii, follow Nintendo’s cable guidance above.
Composite-to-HDMI converter The console provides composite video and the TV has HDMI but no suitable analog input. Confirm composite input, support for the console’s regional video standard, HDMI output and any required power. A converter’s existence does not guarantee it will handle every retro signal.
Retro video processor or scaler You need support for more than one analog input type or explicit handling of standard-definition retro resolutions. Check supported inputs and formats, output, interlaced-video handling, power and current product availability.

A converter changes an analog signal into HDMI. A dedicated retro processor may support several analog signal types and alter the output resolution, but neither label guarantees compatibility with every console or modern TV.

Connect the console to an HDMI-only TV

  1. Connect the console’s AV cable to a compatible converter or processor. Match the signal type at the input; do not connect composite to an input that only accepts component or S-Video.
  2. Connect the converter’s HDMI output to the TV. Use an HDMI input on the TV and note which input you used.
  3. Provide power if the device requires it. Follow its instructions for the power connection before turning it on.
  4. Turn on the console and TV, then select the matching HDMI input. On Samsung TVs, Samsung’s Germany support guidance describes connecting the older Wii through an appropriate adapter or converter and selecting the relevant input; its instructions can vary by TV model and connection. Samsung’s Wii-to-TV guidance was last updated August 18, 2026.

For a direct analog connection, skip the converter and select the TV’s matching analog input instead. For a Wii, Nintendo’s instructions are to connect the AV Multi Out plug to the console and the cable’s RCA plugs to the TV or other equipment inputs. Nintendo’s Wii AV setup page specifies using the supplied cable or the Wii Component AV Cable.

Composite-to-HDMI converters

A composite-to-HDMI converter is a straightforward option when the console outputs composite and the TV lacks a matching input. Elgato describes its Mini AV2HDMI as converting composite input to 720p or 1080p HDMI output. Those are the example device’s listed output options, not a promise that every converter supports every console, regional format or retro resolution. Elgato’s retro-console support article also cautions that some older consoles produce non-standard signals that modern TVs may not display.

Dedicated retro processors

A multi-input processor can be useful when you need composite, S-Video or component support and more deliberate handling of older video formats. As one example, RetroTINK’s 2X Pro page lists those three inputs and line-doubling output. It supports 240p, 288p, 480i and 576i inputs, converting standard-definition signals such as 240p/480i to 480p. The page identifies the 2X Pro as a legacy product, so check its current status and alternatives rather than treating it as a current purchase recommendation. RetroTINK 2X Pro specifications and compatibility notes list its requirements and limitations.

RetroTINK says the 2X Pro uses Bob deinterlacing only, so 480i may flicker. Its page also says inputs at 480p and above are unsupported. Compatibility can depend on the console and region: its optional N64/SNES S-Video cable is for NTSC consoles, while PAL consoles need a special cable and must support S-Video. The same page warns that some consoles’ composite signals may not work correctly.

Troubleshoot a blank screen or missing picture

  1. Check the signal path. Confirm that the console’s output, cable and converter input all use the same video type, and that the converter’s input and HDMI output are connected in the correct direction.
  2. Check power and TV input selection. Power the converter as instructed and select the HDMI port it is connected to. If you connected directly, select the TV’s matching analog input.
  3. Check format and compatibility. Confirm that the converter or processor supports the console’s regional video standard and signal. Elgato notes that a non-standard console signal may not display on some modern TVs; its guidance is in the context of its capture-card passthrough setup, so it should not be treated as a universal fix for every converter. Elgato’s troubleshooting guidance discusses that limitation.
  4. Check console video-output settings only when relevant. On a PlayStation 3, Sony warns that an incompatible output-resolution setting can leave the screen blank and provides a reset procedure to restore standard resolution. Sony also specifies HDCP compatibility for HDMI video and audio output. These instructions apply to the PS3, not to retro consoles generally. Sony’s PS3 video-output guide explains the setting and recovery procedure.
