Keep the wand moving and stop if the surface changes texture, fibers lift, or concrete begins to etch. Pressure at the surface depends on the nozzle, distance, material condition, and technique—not the machine’s PSI label alone.
Before you start: check the washer and make the area safe
Use the manual for your specific washer to confirm compatible nozzle tips, settings, and operating instructions. A pressure figure or nozzle recommendation for one machine or surface is not a universal safe setting.
- Test the spray on a hidden patch before cleaning the visible area.
- Wear protective footwear, keep other people and children clear, and never aim the spray at anyone. A high-pressure jet can cause a serious wound that may initially look minor; the CDC advises seeking prompt medical attention for a pressure-washer injection injury. - Test the GFCI and use grounded equipment. Keep cord connections out of standing water and runoff.
- Never operate a gasoline-powered washer indoors or within 20 feet of a window, door, or vent, as the CDC advises.
Choose a nozzle and distance for the surface
Consumer Reports’ 2026 surface guidance associates a 25° tip with general cleaning of patios, walks, and decks, and a 40° tip with more easily damaged surfaces such as siding and stucco. It does not recommend 0° tips because of unnecessary injury and property-damage risk. Confirm that a tip fits your washer and follow the manual; angle alone does not make a spray safe.
Start farther from the surface and move closer only if the test patch shows the material tolerates it. No single wand distance is established for every surface and machine. For a wood deck, the procedure described by Consumer Reports starts about two feet away and says not to move closer than six inches. These are that procedure’s figures, not a guarantee for every board or washer.

How to wash a deck without damaging the wood
Wood is more vulnerable than sound concrete to an overly forceful or concentrated spray. Consumer Reports’ 2026 surface guide shows 800–1,000 psi for decks as its guidance, not a universal setting. Check your manual and let the test patch—not the machine’s maximum rating—guide whether the surface can tolerate the chosen technique.
- Start with a broad nozzle at low intensity, about two feet from the wood, following the washer manual.
- Move the wand with the grain in broad, overlapping sweeps. Keep it moving rather than concentrating the spray on one spot.
- If the test patch is undamaged but needs more cleaning, adjust cautiously. Under Consumer Reports’ deck procedure, do not move closer than six inches.
- Stop if wood fibers lift or the spray begins to etch the board. Do not continue by making the spray more concentrated.
Can you pressure-wash siding?
Sometimes, with technique matched to the cladding. Consumer Reports says vinyl and fiber-cement siding can typically withstand careful washing. Aluminum can dent, so use the lowest pressure and a broad nozzle, and test an inconspicuous area first.

Keep the spray out of gaps around doors and windows and do not direct it upward into lap joints; water driven behind cladding can cause problems. For wood clapboard on a home built before 1978, Consumer Reports advises testing for lead paint through an EPA-licensed lead-remediation specialist before washing.
How to clean concrete without etching it
Concrete generally tolerates more cleaning power than wood, but age, cracks, decorative finishes, and coatings change the risk. Consumer Reports says a washer capable of at least 1,500 psi can clean concrete and that 2,500–3,000 psi can make the work faster. Those figures describe cleaning capability, not a safe setting for every slab.

Test a small area first, use a wider spray angle where possible, and keep the wand moving. Be especially cautious with aged, cracked, decorative, or coated concrete. Stop if the surface begins to etch or change texture.

Consider a qualified exterior-cleaning professional if the surface is delicate, difficult to reach safely, or has uncertain older paint. In particular, follow the lead-testing advice for pre-1978 wood clapboard rather than washing first. For routine work, the washer manual and a successful test patch are more useful than choosing a setting from PSI alone.
