Choose a pressure washer by the surfaces you plan to clean, how often you will use it, and how much reach and upkeep your home setup allows—not by the highest PSI on the box. For recurring light household jobs, a corded electric washer is a practical starting point; larger areas or tougher buildup may justify a gas model, with added noise, weight, and engine maintenance. The right pressure and spray pattern still depend on the material: a setting that helps clean concrete can damage wood, siding, or a vehicle.

Start with the jobs and surfaces

List the areas you expect to clean and their approximate size: perhaps patio furniture, a small patio, a deck, siding, or a driveway. This list helps determine whether you need a portable machine for occasional light work or a higher-capacity setup for a large, dirty surface. It also prevents a common mistake: assuming one pressure setting is suitable for every job.

Pressure and technique must suit the material. Aluminum siding can dent, so Consumer Reports advises a low-pressure setting and a broad spray. Soft wood also calls for lower pressure. A pressure washer can do more harm than good when used on a car. Check surface-specific advice before cleaning, and follow the material and washer manufacturers’ directions. Consumer Reports’ surface-by-surface guidance was updated June 9, 2026.

Use concrete figures only for concrete

As a task-specific reference, Consumer Reports says a machine capable of at least 1,500 PSI can clean concrete; around 2,500–3,000 PSI can make the work faster. Those are concrete-cleaning figures, not recommended settings for decks, siding, vehicles, or other materials. Its buying guide and surface guide explain why the right output depends on the job.

Choose a power source that fits your workload

Electric, gas, and battery-powered pressure washers are available, but each suits a different mix of cleaning needs and practical constraints. The choice is about the whole setup, not just power.

Type Often suits Trade-offs to consider
Corded electric Light household jobs and recurring cleaning where an outlet is within reach The cord limits range. There is no gas engine to maintain, but you still need to follow the washer’s care instructions.
Gas Larger areas or tougher buildup where faster cleaning is valuable More noise and weight, plus fuel, starting, engine upkeep, and storage to manage.
Battery-powered Buyers who want to consider a cordless category The available guidance identifies this as a category but does not establish a universally best battery-versus-corded choice. Compare the exact model’s rated specifications and suitability for your jobs.

For lighter recurring home use, corded electric is a reasonable place to start. Consider gas if your workload makes its capability worth the additional ownership burden. Consumer Reports’ buying guide, updated May 12, 2026, covers these categories and the factors to compare.

Compare working pressure, water flow, and spray control

PSI describes pressure; GPM describes water flow. Neither number alone tells you whether a washer is right for a particular surface. Compare the model’s rated working specifications with the demands of your jobs, then use a suitable nozzle and the lowest pressure that cleans effectively. A high maximum PSI is not a reason to apply that pressure to a delicate material.

Check which nozzles come with the machine and whether its spray can be set to useful wider patterns. Consumer Reports advises removing a supplied zero-degree nozzle or avoiding the equivalent pinpoint setting on an adjustable nozzle: the concentrated stream can injure someone or damage a surface. Use protective gear and keep people away from the spray area. Its buying guide and surface guidance were updated in 2026.

Check reach, handling, and storage before buying

A washer’s usable range depends on more than its advertised power. Check the pressure hose length and, for a corded electric model, power-cord length. Consumer Reports says longer hoses and cords improve mobility and ideally should each be at least 30 feet. Treat that as a buying-guide recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular length suits every property.

  • Mobility: Consider the machine’s weight, wheels, and whether you can move it between the outlet, water source, and work area.
  • Storage: Make sure there is room for the washer, hose, cord, and attachments, and account for seasonal storage needs.
  • Detergent: Check whether the washer has a detergent system if your jobs require one, and use only compatible, pressure-washer-safe products.
  • Included equipment: Verify the nozzle set, warranty, and manual for the exact model. Do not choose solely on a maximum-pressure label or a combined “cleaning units” figure.

These practical checks are included in Consumer Reports’ pressure-washer buying guidance.

Decide whether to buy, rent, or wait

Ownership makes most sense when you will use the machine often enough to justify its cost, maintenance, and storage. Consumer Reports says its experts view ownership as a money saver for people who pressure-wash three or more times per year, assuming they maintain the unit. This is a rule of thumb, not a guaranteed break-even calculation: prices, rental availability, and the work involved vary.

Renting may be a better fit for an infrequent project, when you do not want to store or maintain a washer, or when a job calls for a hot-water unit intended for professional use. If you are unsure whether the machine will suit your surfaces or how often you will need it, renting can help you avoid committing to an underused tool.

Plan for safe operation and maintenance

Read the manual for the exact washer before connecting or operating it. Maintenance varies by model and power source. Consumer Reports’ guide discusses checking screens, oil where required, spark plugs on gas models, water supply, detergent residue, nozzle blockages, and draining water before freezing storage; pump-saver treatment may also be relevant. Follow the steps that apply to your model and conditions rather than treating every item as universal. Consumer Reports’ guide was updated May 12, 2026.

Use detergents only when their chemical manufacturer identifies them as designed and safe for pressure washers. Simpson Cleaning lists a minimum cold-water supply of 5 GPM and 20 PSI for its equipment. That is Simpson’s stated requirement, not a general specification for every pressure washer; check your own model’s manual and water-supply requirements. Simpson Cleaning’s FAQ does not state a publication date.

Pressure washers can cause serious injuries. Consumer Reports’ safety alert reports 6,057 emergency-room visits in 2014, attributed to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. That is a historical figure, not a current annual injury count. The safety alert underscores why nozzle choice, distance, protective gear, and material guidance matter.
