PSI measures pressure; GPM measures water flow. Pressure helps loosen or scrub dirt, while flow carries loosened dirt away. Both ratings matter, and the right balance depends on the surface and job. A PSI × GPM figure can help compare broad output, but it cannot tell you by itself which washer will clean a particular surface better.
What PSI and GPM mean
PSI: pressure
PSI stands for pounds per square inch. In pressure-washing terms, it describes the force of the water. Simpson Cleaning characterizes PSI as the scrubbing or stripping action that helps dislodge dirt. Simpson Cleaning FAQ
GPM: flow
GPM means gallons per minute: the volume of water the washer delivers over time. Flow helps rinse away the material that pressure has loosened. Simpson’s manual defines GPM as “the unit of measure for the flow rate of water.” Simpson Cleaning pressure-washer manual, PS60842
How to use PSI × GPM
Some manufacturers express output as cleaning units (CU), calculated by multiplying PSI by GPM. Briggs & Stratton uses the related label cleaning power (CP) for maximum PSI × GPM; these are manufacturer comparison measures, not an independent standardized score. Mi-T-M illustrates why the product is only a shorthand: 3,000 PSI × 2.0 GPM and 2,000 PSI × 3.0 GPM both equal 6,000 CU. The first rating emphasizes pressure; the second has more flow. That equality does not establish that the machines clean every surface equally well. Mi-T-M: Pressure Washer Terminology
| Rating | What it tells you | What it does not tell you alone |
|---|---|---|
| PSI | Pressure available to loosen or scrub dirt | How quickly a job will be rinsed or completed |
| GPM | Water flow available to rinse away loosened dirt | How much force the spray applies |
| PSI × GPM (CU or CP, depending on manufacturer) | A convenient product of the stated ratings | Whether two washers will perform equally on a specific surface |
Which rating matters more for your job?
Neither number is a universal winner. Simpson says the suitable combination depends on the pressure-washing need, and advises considering more GPM for a large surface because greater flow can help finish the rinse sooner. Simpson Cleaning FAQ

- Large areas and rinsing: Consider whether the washer’s flow suits the size of the area and how much rinsing it requires. A compatible surface-cleaning accessory may help on broad flat surfaces; check the washer’s ratings and instructions before using one.
- Delicate items: Lower-pressure, higher-flow settings are among Briggs & Stratton’s examples for cars, patio furniture, and lawn equipment.
- Other surfaces: Briggs & Stratton lists medium settings for siding, brick patios, wood decks, and garage floors, and higher-pressure/lower-flow settings for tougher tasks. These are manufacturer examples, not universal prescriptions; material, condition, nozzle, distance, and model instructions all affect the choice. Briggs & Stratton: Pressure Washer Buying Guide
Why nozzle choice changes the result
A washer’s maximum PSI is not the pressure you must apply to every surface. The nozzle’s orifice and spray angle affect the spray delivered at the work, and distance also matters. Mi-T-M explains that nozzle selection changes the pressure at the surface; Briggs & Stratton describes task-specific spray patterns. Match the nozzle to the washer and surface using the manufacturer’s instructions. Mi-T-M: Pressure Washer Terminology Briggs & Stratton: Pressure Washer Buying Guide
If the spray is too aggressive, use a wider spray pattern or increase distance only as the machine manual directs. For a large flat surface, a compatible surface cleaner or rotating nozzle may be an option, but verify its compatibility and operating ratings first. A practical way to compare two washers
- Check both ratings: Compare PSI and GPM individually, then calculate PSI × GPM if you want the shared product figure.
- Match the balance to the job: Consider whether the work calls for more scrubbing force, more rinsing flow, or a balance of both.
- Check surface control: Look at the adjustments and compatible nozzle patterns available for the model, and follow its instructions for the material you plan to clean.
- Check accessory fit: For a broad flat area, confirm that any surface cleaner or other accessory is supported by the washer and appropriate for its output.
Safety and model-specific requirements
Follow the manual for your exact washer; one model’s limits are not universal. For example, the Simpson PS60842 manual specifies a cold-water supply with a minimum 20 PSI and 5 GPM, and warns that running its unit for more than two minutes without pulling the trigger may overheat the pump. The same manual warns against directing its discharge at people, unprotected skin, eyes, pets, or animals. Check your own model’s water-supply requirements and safety instructions before operating it. Simpson Cleaning pressure-washer manual, PS60842
