Leave the manufacturer-installed inner-screen film in place unless the phone maker or an authorized service provider tells you otherwise. Keep grit and sharp objects away from the open display, check for anything trapped between the screens before folding, and avoid pressing hard on the flexible panel. If the film bubbles, lifts, or becomes damaged, follow support guidance for your exact model rather than adding or removing film yourself.
Everyday habits that reduce avoidable damage
- Keep grit away. Crumbs and fine particles can scratch or damage the display. Avoid dusty environments where practical, and keep keys, coins, pens, and other sharp or hard objects away from the open screen. Google cautions Pixel Fold owners that flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens and advises avoiding crumbs, fingernails, and sharp objects in its Pixel Fold safety and regulatory guide. Samsung and Xiaomi also warn against sharp objects or excessive pressure on the inner display in their model-specific care guidance (Samsung; Xiaomi).
- Check before folding. Look for debris or objects on the display and in the hinge area before closing the phone. Motorola specifically warns against obstructions between the screens or hinge, including cards, coins, and keys; Google likewise advises checking for objects or fine particles before closing (Motorola Razr hardware guide; Google Pixel Fold safety guide).
- Use a light touch. Do not press hard on the flexible display or use a fingernail, pen, or other hard object to tap or scrape it. Samsung’s US foldable care page says: “DO NOT press the screen with a hard or sharp object, such as a pen or your fingernail, or apply excessive pressure” (Samsung foldable care).
- Clean gently. Where Samsung’s guidance applies, wipe with a soft, dry cloth and avoid pressure. A dedicated soft cloth is optional; Samsung does not endorse a particular brand. Do not treat this advice as approval to use liquid cleaners or abrasive materials on the inner display.
Leave the installed inner-screen film in place
On the foldable models covered by their guidance, Samsung describes the installed film as a protective layer and recommends leaving it attached; it warns that arbitrary removal or uncertified film can damage the panel or affect performance (Samsung foldable care; Samsung film guidance). Google’s Pixel Fold safety guide also says not to remove its pre-installed screen protector (Google Pixel Fold safety guide).
These instructions are not universal across every foldable model. Check the manufacturer’s support page for your exact phone before removing the factory film, applying another protector, or changing how you clean the display. The reviewed guidance from Samsung, Google, Motorola, and Xiaomi cautions against unsanctioned removal or film application for the models it covers; adhesive, installation, and service risks can vary by device.
What to do if the film is scratched, bubbling, or lifting
- Identify the exact model. Find its manufacturer’s care instructions and check whether the installed film is replaceable and how replacement is handled.
- Do not peel or press down a lifting edge on your own. Samsung says the film is replaceable but cautions against arbitrary removal. Motorola recommends approved personnel for Razr screen-protector replacement, warning that other replacement methods can damage the screen or affect warranty coverage (Motorola Razr hardware guide).
- Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Ask whether replacement is available for your model and region, and what service terms apply. Google Pixel Fold owners should follow Google’s instruction not to remove the pre-installed protector independently (Google Pixel Fold safety guide).
Do not assume that a generic aftermarket inner-screen film is a safe substitute. Whether a replacement is appropriate—and who should install it—depends on the phone model and manufacturer guidance.
