Choose BHIM if you want an app focused on UPI payments. Choose Samsung Wallet if you have a compatible Galaxy phone and want UPI alongside other digital wallet items such as cards, passes, tickets, or keys. Both cover common UPI tasks in the official descriptions, but the available evidence does not establish a winner for speed, reliability, fees, or security.
How Samsung Wallet UPI and BHIM differ
The main difference is scope. Samsung Wallet is a broader platform, with Samsung Pay as its payment sub-brand; its available features can include cards, passes, tickets, and keys. BHIM is presented in the cited NPCI guidance as a UPI-focused app. Those differences can guide your choice, but they do not by themselves indicate which app delivers a better UPI payment experience.
Samsung’s India UPI instructions still use the name “Samsung Pay.” Samsung’s Wallet page explains that Samsung Pay is integrated under the Samsung Wallet umbrella. This article uses “Samsung Wallet” for the current platform while retaining Samsung Pay when describing the wording of the UPI guide.
What you can do with each app
Samsung Wallet UPI
Samsung’s India guide describes sending money to a virtual payment address (VPA) or bank account using an IFSC, requesting or receiving money, scanning a UPI QR code, paying online with a VPA, checking an account balance, paying bills, and setting UPI as a cab-payment method. Because the guide is labeled Samsung Pay and is not clearly dated, confirm that the features and menu names are available in your current app.

BHIM
BHIM/NPCI’s guideline document, updated 25 September 2024, describes linking multiple bank accounts, direct bank-to-bank transfers, sending and receiving money, and transaction alerts. It is a branding and communication guide, not an exhaustive, current app feature list.
The descriptions overlap on everyday UPI use, but they are not symmetrical or comprehensive enough to establish exact feature parity. Check the current app and your bank for the specific payment task you need.

Check Samsung Wallet compatibility before choosing it
Samsung says Wallet availability and features vary by country or region, device model, carrier, and firmware. Do not assume that UPI works on every Samsung phone: check the Wallet app on your exact device and confirm current regional availability.
Samsung’s UPI setup guide says the mobile number used during setup must be the same number registered with the bank account you select. Its documented setup flow includes verifying the bank account and setting a UPI PIN, with debit or ATM card details in that flow. Banking screens and requirements can change, so follow the current in-app instructions and contact your bank if the flow differs.

On 30 October 2025, Samsung announced UPI onboarding during new Galaxy-device setup and biometric verification intended to remove PIN entry for everyday UPI use. The announcement used future-rollout language, so it does not establish that either feature is available on every Galaxy model or to every user. Check the exact device and current app rather than assuming rollout.
What the security information does—and does not—show
Samsung says Wallet is protected by Knox, fingerprint recognition, and encryption. In a separate support explanation, it describes tokenization as replacing card details with a device-specific token and discusses a secure environment for sensitive information. That material concerns Samsung’s own Wallet protections and includes card-wallet context; it does not compare Samsung UPI with BHIM or establish either app’s real-world fraud rate.

For either app, verify the recipient and amount before confirming a payment, protect your UPI PIN, and use the official app. A biometric option should not be treated as proof that a PIN or other authorization step is unnecessary in every payment flow.

- Choose BHIM if you want a dedicated UPI app and do not need Samsung Wallet’s wider set of wallet functions.
- Choose Samsung Wallet if you use a compatible Galaxy phone and value having UPI alongside other supported Wallet items.
- Check before switching if a particular payment feature or bank matters to you: consult the current app and bank, because the cited descriptions do not prove feature-for-feature parity.
Neither source set establishes a universal advantage in speed, reliability, charges, limits, supported languages, or security outcomes. Make the decision around device eligibility, app scope, and the current payment features you actually need.
