Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose the competition or learning program first, then select a kit that fits its current rules, your students, and your full-season budget. A kit’s advertised price is only one part of the cost: registration, season materials, event fees, devices, batteries, replacement parts, and transport may be separate.
Start with the team’s purpose and program
If students will enter a competition, identify the league and season before comparing products. Each program sets its own legal components and may require a season-specific game or field set. Read the current official manual and check for updates before buying; last season’s parts assumptions may no longer apply.
For VEX IQ, the current competition page identifies the 2026–2027 game as Level Up and links both the official manual and a season game kit. VEX says the manual is the official rules source and may be updated during the season, so confirm the latest version and component legality before buying add-ons. For FIRST Tech Challenge, use the current season’s game and rules materials. FIRST’s linked materials cover the 2025–2026 DECODE season and show versioned manual sections with update dates; that archive does not establish requirements for a future season. If the goal is classroom learning rather than a named competition, begin with what students should learn: basic construction, programming, mechanisms, or iterative design. A classroom-oriented kit may include curriculum support and accessible first builds, while a competition kit may offer more structural and mechanism choices. Those labels do not establish compatibility with a particular competition.
Match the kit to students and team size
Think about who will build and program, and how many students will share each robot. A kit that suits experienced builders may frustrate beginners if assembly and troubleshooting demand too much instructor help. Consider whether students can make progress independently or whether one person will end up controlling the build.

FIRST LEGO League has age- and grade-banded editions, and its current program page distinguishes LEGO Education SPIKE technology from the Computer Science & AI kit-based BIOGLOW Future Edition. The same page describes a separate SPIKE-based Founders Edition and says SPIKE Prime and Essential products are available through LEGO Education until June 30, 2026. Since that date has passed, do not assume those products are still available for a new purchase; verify the applicable edition and current storefront. Calculate the whole-season cost
Build a budget around what the team must actually pay for, not just the box. The package details and fees vary by program, season, region, and team size, so verify each item with the organizer or vendor before committing.
- Robot kit and any required season game, field, or annual materials.
- Team registration and local event fees.
- Computers or other programming devices, if they are not already available.
- Batteries, charging equipment, replacement parts, and any necessary tools.
- Shipping, storage, and transport to events.
For example, FIRST’s $1,300 and $4,400 Future Edition figures are estimates for the specified US Grade 3–5 options and package contents; local event fees are separate. Do not read either figure as a universal per-team price or a complete local season budget. VEX’s listed $729.99 for the IQ Competition Kit is the kit price shown on its product page, not the cost of participation.

Check software, support, and reuse
A robotics system includes more than its mechanical parts. Before choosing, check which programming tools it supports, whether its curriculum fits your instruction plan, and how easily the team can get documentation and replacement parts. Consider how parts will be inventoried, stored, and charged between sessions, and whether students can continue with the system in future seasons.
Reuse can make a kit more valuable, but it is not a guarantee of future competition eligibility. Rules, required season materials, and product availability can change. Recheck the next season’s official rules and the current product information before relying on existing hardware.
