When a game’s support ends, you may lose only online features—or access to the entire game. The difference is how much depends on publisher servers, account checks, and online-only content. Ubisoft’s The Crew became inaccessible after its servers shut down; The Crew 2 has an offline mode that retains core play but disables several features. So “single-player,” “offline mode,” and “physical copy” are not guarantees: check the specific game’s launch requirements, saved-game model, and offline feature list.
What “support ending” can mean
Support ending is not one universal event. A publisher might retire matchmaking, leaderboards, statistics, or community features while leaving a game playable. In other cases, a server shutdown can prevent the game from launching or being accessed at all. Ubisoft’s October 2023 notice about decommissioning older-game services describes cases where purchased games remain playable despite losing certain online functions; it does not guarantee the same outcome for every title or platform. Ubisoft’s service-decommissioning notice explains that distinction.
The key question is not simply whether a game is called live-service or offline. It is what the game needs a publisher or platform service to do: start, authenticate a license, load a world, validate a save, or provide optional features. A game may rely on servers for some of those functions but not others.
Two Ubisoft games show why outcomes differ
The Crew: server shutdown ended access
Ubisoft announced on December 14, 2023 that The Crew would be delisted and remain playable until March 31, 2024. It said the game would no longer be accessible after the server shutdown on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna, and Ubisoft+. Ubisoft cited upcoming server-infrastructure and licensing constraints. This was more than the retirement of matchmaking: access to the game ended. It is one documented outcome, not a rule for every live-service game. Ubisoft’s announcement also reported more than 2 million monthly active players for The Crew 2 and over 40 million players across the franchise “last year”—2022, given the announcement’s December 2023 date. Those are publisher-reported figures, not measures of shutdown risk.

The Crew 2: core play remains, some systems do not
Ubisoft’s October 20, 2025 patch notes describe a selectable Offline Mode. The notes say that exploration, events, vehicles, and customization remain available offline. Summits and Live Battle, leaderboards and ghosts, user-generated content, the Far & Beyond Shop, and community features are unavailable in that mode. This is a practical example of an offline mode preserving substantial play without preserving every online system. Ubisoft’s patch notes list the mode and its exclusions.
The save behavior matters too: the notes say offline progression is saved locally. If a player reconnects and creates a fresh save from the most recent online progression, that save replaces progress made offline. A feature list alone is therefore not enough; players should understand which save is active and how syncing affects it.

Compare what a specific game will retain
Before buying—or before relying on a game you already own—check these points for the exact game, platform, edition, and region. The cited examples do not establish the requirements for other titles.
- Launch and authentication: Can the game start without an internet connection? Does it need a publisher account, license check, or server response even for solo play?
- Local versus server-dependent play: Which campaign, maps, events, modes, or world systems run on the device, and which need publisher servers?
- Online-only features: Identify multiplayer, leaderboards, user-created content, shops, time-limited events, and community features that may disappear separately from core play.
- Save location and syncing: Is progress local, cloud-based, account-bound, or split across online and offline saves? Could reconnecting or syncing overwrite local progress?
- Installation and redownloads: Can the game be installed from preserved files or a disc, and does it require a download or update to launch? A physical copy alone does not establish that the full game is on the disc or that it will launch offline.
- End-of-life plan: Has the publisher announced an offline conversion, self-hosting, peer-to-peer support, or another specific transition? Treat plans as plans, not guarantees, unless the change is delivered and documented.
Why a platform’s offline setting may not be enough
Steam describes Offline Mode as useful when internet access is limited or unavailable, but warns that some games cannot be started in that mode. The platform setting cannot remove a game’s own server, authentication, or launch requirements. Check both the platform’s offline guidance and the title’s requirements. Steam Support’s Offline Mode guidance states this limitation.

What the EU policy discussion does—and does not—say
In its June 16, 2026 response to the Stop Destroying Videogames European Citizens’ Initiative, the European Commission described how publisher support discontinuation can make a game partially or entirely unusable. The Commission said an EU-wide legal act requiring publishers to keep games playable after commercial exploitation, as requested by the initiative, would not be proportionate. It also described existing EU consumer-law safeguards on transparency, conformity, and remedies, and said it intended to explore a possible self-regulatory code with industry stakeholders. This is the Commission’s stated position in an EU policy document, not a rule for every country or a resolution of an individual dispute. European Commission response, June 16, 2026.
